Hazel is a sixteen year old girl with stage 4 lung cancer. Her mom thinks that Hazel is depressed and makes her go to Cancer Kid Support Group, where she is friends with Isaac, who has eye cancer. Then, the next week, there is a new boy there, Augustus who stares at Hazel. And she stres back. THe become friends, and he lends her a book to read. -

Augustus and Hazel read the books the other gave them, and Augustus freaks out because the book ends abruptly. Hazel explains how she has sent many letters to the author asking him to explain what happens to the character's mom. Augustus and Hazel begin dating. -

Augustus and Hazel are dating, and Augustus decides to use his Wish that the cancer kids get to send him and Hazel to Amsterdam, where they can meet the author of the book and discuss what happens afterwards. Hazel's parents finally agree. Hazel and her mum show up at Gus's house and hear Gus and his parents in an argument. they go back to the car to wait. he comes outside smiling and they got to the airport. -

they go to the airport and get on the plane. Gus tells Hazel he is in love with her, and knowing that she has terminal cancer, she cannot reply. He turns away and falls asleep. the plane lands in Amsterdam, and they all take a nap. Gus and Hazel go out to dinner at an extremely expensive resteraunt and drink champagne, and a woman in a canoe shouts to them, The beautiful couple is beautiful! -

That night, Gus and Hazel have sex. The next day, they go see the author of the book who turns out to be a nasty drunk who is very bluntly rude to Hazel and Gus. They don't let it ruin their trip though. the day before they go back to america gus tells hazel that he has cancer everywhere in his body. he eventually dies, leaving hazel to mourn, but see the beauty in life.
