  • Augustus and Hazel lose their virginity

  • Hazel is diagnosed with depression

    Late in the winter, Hazel's mother dicided Hazel was depressed due to the fact that she never left the house, spent a lot of time in bed, re-read the same book countless times, and thought a lot about death. So she was taken to a doctor, who agreed, and diagnosed Hazel with depression, as well as recommended she go to a support group.
  • Hazel begins Support Group and Befriends Isaac

    Isaac was the only thing Hazel liked about the support group. He was a long faced, skinny guy with straight blonde hair swept over one eye. He had eye cancer which led to one of his eyes getting cut out as a kid. He was in the group because his remaining eye was now in mortal peril due to some reoccurance.
  • Hazel meets Augustus

    Augustus was long and leanly muscular, he had short, straight mahogany hair and he was around Hazel's age. He suffered from osteosarcoma for about a year and a half but he was only at the supprt group for Isaac.
  • Hazel explains her cancer story to Augustus

    Hazel was diagnosed with Stage 4 thyroid cancer when she was thirteen. They were told it was incurable. However, she had a surgery call radical neck dissection, then went throough radiation. She also tried chemo which caused her tumors to shrink, but they grew back. By now she was 14 and ready to die in the ICU but the doctor sucked some fluid out of her lungs and antiboitics started working. Then Hazel was perscribed an experimental drug called Phalanxifor and it worked, the tumors shrunk.
  • Agustus and Hazel exchange books

    Hazel lends Augustus her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten, which he agrees to read if Hazel reads his favorite. This book is about a girl named Anna (the narrator) and her one-eyed mother, who is a professional gardener obsessed with tulips. They have a normal lower-middle-class life until Anna gets this rare blood cancer. However, the twist to the book, is it ends mid sentence because Anna dies, and you don't know what happens to any of the other charaters.

  • Isaac breaks up with his girlfriend, Monica

  • Augustus tells Hazel about his email from Van Houten

    Because Augustus is so obsessed with learning what happened to the other characters of AIA, he tracks down Houten's assistant and sends her an email. Van houten wrote back and even though he refused to write another book, Hazel still has her questions about the end of AIA. She asks if Augustus would give her the email address, and he, of course, agrees. Hazel then writes to Van Houten all of her questions and awaits a reply.
  • Isaac has his eye surgery and becomes cancer free

  • Hazel tells Augustus about her email

    She tells Augustus about the response and how ther family can't afford it. He asks her about her wish (supplied by the Genie Foundation, one wish per sick kid) to no avail however, because Hazel used her wishwhen she thought she was dying, when she was thirteen.
  • Hazel gets an response to her email

    Van Houten explains to Hazel that he will not write the answers to her questions out, because it ould substitute as a sequel, which he is very stubborn as to writing. He says he would talk to her on the telephone, but that too, could be recorded and be found a sequel. The only way he deems it possible for him to tell Hazel the answers to her questions is in person. However he is in Amsterdam, Netherlands and she is in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • Augustus explains to Hazel that he's going to use his wish on her

    Augustus surprises Hazel with a day at the park with many many hints at what his is going to tell her. Dutch this, that, and the color orange (color of the netherlands) everywhere! He explains that he talked to the Genies and they told him that they can arrange a trip to Amsterdam May 3rd to May 7th.

    Hazel stays in the ICU

    At four in the morning, Hazel woke up with a horrific pain that, Hazel woke up in the ICU and was told that she had a headache from poor oxygenation, which was caused by a liter and a half of fluid in her lungs (which, yes, had been drained). It was recognized that the trip had to be moved, but the Genies we're fine with that.
  • Hazel's Cancer Team meeting

    They said that it would be a risk to put Hazel on an 8 hour flight, but that everything else would be set, and It was up to her. However, it wasn't really up to her, it was up to her parents. Hazel's parents told Hazel that she couldn't go to Amsterdam unless there was a safe medical agreement.
  • Hazel tells Augustus she can't go to Amsterdam

  • Hazel's mom tells her the trip is back on

    Dr. Maria apparently made a very convincing case that they should let Hazel go to Amsterdam. The trip is back on, and only a week away.
  • Departure and Arrival to Amsterdam (also Augustus tell Hazel he loves her)

  • Hazel and Augustus go on a date to Oranjee

    During this date, Augustus explained that the suit he was wearing was supposed to be his death suit. The he would be in at his funeral. He explained how he was very uncertain of his situation and how he picked out his cemetary plot and planned his funeral, just in case. Luckily, he survived. He also tells Hazel about his ex, Caroline Mathers.
  • Lidewij takes Hazel and Augustus to the Anne Frank Museum

    Hazel had to make it up many stairs in order to experience Anne Frank's living space. At the top, Hazel and Augustus kissed for the first time, and when they stopped, all the people in the room started clapping.
  • Augustus and Hazel lose their virginity

  • Hazel and Augustus meet Peter van Houten

    During the visit, Van Houten is extremely rude. He only answers one of Hazel's questions and then he insults Hazel's disease. In the chaos, Lidewij, Houten's assistant, resigns due to Houten's behavior. Hazel and Augustus leave without the answers, and Augustus tells Hazel that he will write her an ending, an ending better than any ending Van Houten could give her.
  • Augustus tells Hazel his cancer is back, for good

    They had started palliaative chemo, but he gave it up to go to Amsterdam with Hazel, and his parent fought that choice right up until he left.
  • They arrive back to Indiana

  • Isaac and Augustus egg Monica's car

    After they egged it, Augustus asked Hazel to take a picture, which she did. It was the last picture she took of Augustus.
  • The Lancasters have dinner with the Waters

  • Augustus ended up in the E.R. with chest pain

  • Augustus and Hazel go to the park where Augustus told Hazel they'd be going to Amsterdam

    They sat and drank champagne out of Winnie-the-Pooh cups
  • The Last Good day before The Last Good day

    Hazel met Augustus' entire family and Gus's fatherkissed the side of Hazel's head and told her "I thank God for you every day, kid."
  • The Last Good Day: Augustus attends his own funeral

    He arranged a funeral in the literal heart of Jesus so that he could hear Isaac and Hazel's eulogies.
  • Augustus called Hazel at 2:35 am and once again, was sent to the hospital

    He called her from a gas station in a panic because he did something to his G-tube and couldn't fix it. When Hazel arrived, Augustus was sitting in his own vomit and the spot his G-tube was supposed to be looked infected. Hazel had to call 911.
  • Augustus Waters passes away

  • Augustus' Funeral

    Hazel went up to Augustus' casket and kissed him, she also snuck a pack of cigarretes into his casket, like she promised she would get him. She also gave a eulogy, not as great as the one she had told at his prefuneral, though. Believe it or not, Van Houten decided to attend.
  • Van Houten apoligizes to Hazel

    During his apolgy, he revealed what AIA really was about, his daughter who died of leukemia.
  • Hazel reads Augustus' last message

    It was a letter to Van Houten asking if he would eulogize Hazel when she died. However, he did not read it, but Hazel did.
    The last lines were as follows:
    “you don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers.”
    To which Hazel responds:
    "I do, Augustus.
    I do."
