Hazel is forced by her mother to go to the suport group.
Hazel has lung cancer and everyone, including herself, is prepared that her health isn´t getting any better. Her mother suggest that she should try out a suport group in a church nearby. Hazel think it´s stupid, and doesn´t see the point of joining if she is "going to die anyway". But her mother is stubborn. Hazel ends up standing in front of the churchdoor, ready for her first time in the suport group. What she didn´t know was that this action were going to change her whole life. -
She meets August (Gus).
Hazels friend Isaac does also have cancer, and this time he brought a friend to the suport group. His name was August, and he beat cancer, but still suffered from the consequences. Hazel can´t help but notice that August was staring at her. She confronts him, and ends up getting an invite to watch a movie at his place. The only reason he was staring was "because of her beaty". -
Hazels favorite book
Hazel accepts the invitation and agrees to watch a movie with Gus. He introduces her to his favorite book, that includes a lot of fantasy about zombies and war. They made a deal that if she read his favorite book, he had to read hers: An Imperial Affection. -
Contacts Peter Van Houten
The author of her favorite book is Peter Van Houten. Gus loves the story and persuades her to contact the author to discuss the ending of the book, because it is ending in a cliffhanger. They gets their respond after a short time, where Peter says that they will get their answers, but not over email. He wants to meet in person. -
Gus uses his wish.
Kids who has cancer gets one wish: they can get a free trip anywhere they want. Hazel had already used her wish, and there were no chance that she would get money for a trip to visit Peter Van Houten. Gus wants to come with her and offers to share his wish with her. They are going to Amsterdam toghether. -
They were leaving to Amsterdam
Augusts wish covered the expenses. Hazel did still have cancer so her mother joined them for her daughters safety. They were very exited to meet the author, but when they get to his front door he didn´t want to speak to them. He never thought that they was actually going to show up. Their dissapointment is big. -
Augusts Secret
Everyone thought that Hazel was more treathened by the cancer, but it turned out that Gus had a check in at the hospital. The cancer had spread to his entire body, there were no chance that he was going to be saved. Hazel got to know his secret while they were visiting Amsterdam. She got angry and sad, she had already fallen for him. -
Gus dies.
Gus gets even worse. They are still in love, but he was going to die. He spent the last of his time at the hospital with Hazel. She agrees to speek in his funeral and knows that she is going to lose him. -
The ending
Isaac tells Hazel that Gus was writing a letter to her. Eventually she finds it and tears falls down her cheeks while reading it.
