    Hazel doesn't like going to this support group because she doesn't like talking about her cancer. Theres this one guy friend she does meet there, named Gus who she meets through her best friend Isaac. All 3 of them have cancer, and Isaac looses his eye sight from it.

    Hazel and Gus start hanging out and Hazel has Gus read her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. They both are obsessed with the book and end up writing the author to ask how it ends.

    Hazel begins to feel herself pulling away from Gus. Gus had a wish from "The Genies" (a fictionalized version of the Make a Wish Foundation), and wants to use it to fly himself and Hazel to Amsterdam, Netherlands to meet Peter van Houten, who is the author of An Imperial Affliction.

    Hazel decides that she does not want to pursue a relationship with Gus, so that she can minimize the pain her eventual death will cause him, as Gus lost his former girlfriend, Caroline Mathers to cancer.

    Hazel wakes up in the middle of the night with traumatic traumma and her head is killing her, finding out at the hospital later that she has pneumonia. During her weeks in the hospital, Gus visits her without her even knowing.
  • Way to Amersterdam

    Hazel and Gus fly out to Amsterdam and meet with the author, which goes horrible, as he is very rude and doesn't answer any of Hazel or Gus's questions.

    Hazel and Gus then leave the authors house, and travel to see Anne Frank's house, where it is raining and they share their first kiss together.
  • Climax part 2

    Gus then reveals to Hazel that his cancer has returned and he promises to fight it off for her. Causing Hazel to be severly heart broken.

    Hazel and Gus return and Gus starts treatment that is difficult and he is told he may not live very much longer.

    Their relationship goes through some struggles, but he is always there for her. Gus wants Hazel and Isaac to have a Pre-funeral for him, so he could know what they would say about him at his actual funeral.
  • The actual funeral

    Days later, Gus passes away. The day of his funeral, Hazel sees that Van Houten traveled to America just to attend Gus's funeral.
  • The secret of Van Houten

    Van Houten appears at Gus's funeral because Van had a daughter that died of cancer several years ago. Hazel then encourages him to write another book and become sober.
  • Hazel cooperating with death

    Hazel becomes lonely after Gus's death, and starts hanging out with Isaac. Then Isaac tells Hazel that Gus had left something for her when he died.
  • The letter

    The letter
    Gus had written a letter for Van Houten, supposedly about the alterations for 'An Imperial Affliction.' Which surprises Hazel and she loves reading the letter every now and then.
  • Resolution

    The novel ends with Hazel answering Augustus' letter by saying that she did in fact enjoy her time with him as much as he said he enjoyed his with her.
  • Exposition

    Hazel is a 16 year old girl who has cancer. She lives with her parents as an only child. Her parents maker her attend a support group to help her coupe with her feelings.
