    The Book

    The first book was written in China in 868 A.D. Then, with the invention of the printing press, books were able to be copied and distributed. One of these printed books was a version of the Bible. In 1486, the first ever printed advertisement was included in a book.

    The Rise of Newspaper

    The newspaper was developed around 1600. The first printed newspaper was called 'The Relation'. In 1690, Benjamin Harris printed the first newspaper outside of the UK. The first African-American newspaper was printed in 1827.

    Telegraph and Telephone

    The first telegraph was set up by Samuel Morse. In 1858 the first trans-Atlantic cable was laid, allowing communication into the new world. The telephone was invented by Graham Bell, people were now able to sit in their homes and communicate with people all across the globe.

    Radio and Television

    In 1885, the first photographic film was invented, a video of a horse running. In 1894 the radio was invented. Radio programs became important sources of news for people across the world without needing to buy a newspaper. The television was invented in 1925. This allowed news to be seen rather than just heard or read. The first moon-walk was televised in full colour.

    Internet and Smartphone

    In the second half of the 1900s, the internet was developed. This allowed an array of information to be accessed through the click of a button. The e-mail was created in the 1970s and in 2001, the first instant message services were introduced.
