    Evolution of Art Genres

  • 1500

    1400 Renaissance art was established

    1400 Renaissance art was established
The art made during the Renaissance is a stark contrast to the religious pieces made beforehand. Renaissance art focuses more on nature and individuals than religion, which is why a lot of art made in that time period are landscapes and portraits in some form. The Renaissance was one of the biggest changes in art history, paving the way for many other art genres to be created. The focus leaning towards humans and nature helped create art genres like Abstract Expressionism.(ems_onllind_sys)
  • 1720 Rococo was established

    1720 Rococo was established
Rococo took a more detailed approach to art, focusing mainly on the small details and ornamentation. Rococo saw architecture and humans as canvases to draw details onto. Rococo helped develop a keen eye for detail in many genres later on such as realism. Its obsession with depicting higher-class people during their normal activities also fueled realistic art genres. • 1790 Romanticism was established

    1790 Romanticism was established
Romanticism focuses on emotion and imagination, both parts connecting the art to the artist. Showing how the artist felt while painting made the art feel personal and showed individuality. Romanticism had an impact on art genres by truly showing the power that can be felt through emotional scenes instead of realistic depictions of our everyday lives. Genres like Fauvism and Surrealism evolved from the basic ideas of Romanticism like emotions and imagination rather than realism. (Galitz)
  • 1840 Realism was established

    1840 Realism was established
Realism was entirely based upon capturing a moment or feeling as it was, not as it felt. Realism was made in response to the new unrealistic romanticized styles appearing. Realism’s grounded approach has since been echoed throughout other genres like Cubism and Surrealism, acting as its roots. Although most other genres of art focus on something entirely different from realism, they still hide hints of real life in their works. (Sonya)
  • 1865 Impressionism was established

    1865 Impressionism was established
Impressionism is incredibly unique in the way it structures its art. The general idea is that it feels more like an impression instead of a picture, so their brushstrokes are broken and barely convey the forms of the subjects. Impressionism gave way to the idea that you can convey certain things in more simplistic ways. This general idea led to the creation of art genres like Minimalism and Cubism. (Samu)
  • 1900 Fauvism was established

    1900 Fauvism was established
Fauvism stripped color of its basic limitations and allowed for colors to be used more freely. Colors could depict emotions in entirely new ways and were not tied down by reality. Fauvism contributes to the progression of art genres because the basic idea of a disconnection from reality to nurture expression is what fuels the basis around Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. • 1920 Cubism was established

    1920 Cubism was established
Cubism strived to emphasize the 2-dimensional feel of the canvas by getting rid of foreshortening and perspective. Cubism also believed that art shouldn't always copy nature perfectly, leading to a strong style entirely different from anything seen before. Cubism changed how art genres were handled later on by throwing out previously thought to be essential rules of art like perspective to make room for pure expression. (Rewald)
  • 1924 surrealism was established

    1924 surrealism was established
Surrealism threw away rationalism and realistic depictions to instead focus on imagination and almost dream-like unconscious feelings. Depicting incredibly interesting and sometimes disturbing realities where anything can happen. Surrealism impacted art genres soon to come by disregarding reality entirely and making the leap to true imagination unfiltered by realistic expectations. Abstract Expressionism is the next logical step and uses Surrealism as a base. (“Surrealism Movement Overview”)
  • 1940 Abstract Expressionism was established

    1940 Abstract Expressionism was established
Abstract Expressionism focuses on the portrayal of individual psyches, doing so by disregarding fine details in favor of spontaneous brush movements and improvisation. Abstract Expressionism directly inspired art genres like Minimalism by inspiring artists to convey their own emotions and thoughts by focusing on simple things like color. (Paul)
  • 1960 Minimalism was established

    1960 Minimalism was established
Minimalism is unique because it focuses on the materials used instead of the emotions or depictions in the art. They wanted the art to stand alone, disconnected from its creator. Minimalism’s bizarre take on art has fueled the fire of inspiration for the 2000s and led to modern art being increasingly unique and interesting. Every new genre of art fuels the next, and thanks to Minimalism the early 2000s were full of lively decorations. (“Minimalism Movement Overview”)
