The Day of Judgement

  • Mrs. Weidenbach

Mrs. Weidenbach drops by. She explains to Grandma that because she is the banker's wife, it would not look good to win at the county fair. She persuades Grandma to enter her famous gooseberry pies at the county fair.
  • Arriving at the Fair

Everyone is dressed nicely. Joey and Mary Alice are surprised at how nicely Grandma is dressed, including a blue ribbon in her hatband.
  • Seeing Barnie Buchanan

The party sees a pilot with a biplane, selling rides. Unfortunately, Joey can't pay for a ride and the only free rides are given to the 1st place blue ribbon winners of the fair. Flying has always been Joey's dream.
  • Registering

As they are registering Grandma's pie, Grandma sees Rupert Pennypacker, a fellow competitor. She is worried about how the competition will turn out, because she knows that Rupert is skilled at baking. Coincidentally, Rupert is also entering a gooseberry pie.
  • Switching the Labels

Barnie's plane makes a roaring sound as it is flying around the registering tent. Even though the people registering can't see the plane, they look around, distracted. In the momentary chaos, Grandma switches the labels for the two gooseberry pies. She thinks that Rupert's pie will be better than hers, so she is taking credit for his entry.
  • Awards

Joey is outside when the awards are given. Rupert got 1st place with Grandma taking 2nd. Remember, this means that Grandma's pie is the actual first place winner, but if she said pointed this out, everyone would know that she cheated.
  • Grandma Lies

The party walks up to Barnie's biplane. Grandma claims that she is the 1st place blue ribbon winner of baking, here to get her free ride. Barnie protests and is confused, because he already gave a free ride to the winner of the baking category. Grandma takes the crumpled ribbon from her hatband and shows the end of it to Barnie, making him think that she has the first blue ribbon. She says that the ride he gave before was to the winner of a different category.
  • The Ride

It takes several people to lift Grandma into the plane, but when she's in it, it is too heavy to lift off. Grandma climbs down and says that Joey can go instead. Joey climbs in, and his dream comes true. He loves riding in a biplane.
  • Confronting Grandma

Back at home, Joey tells Grandma that he has a few things on his mind. First, he asks her if she actually thought that the plane would lift off the ground with her in it, and she replies that she didn't. She just wanted to sit in the cockpit. Then, he asks if she had switched the labels on the gooseberry pie, and she admitted that she had.
