Reverend Parris caught a group of girls dancing in the forest with Tituba. -
Betty was found unconscious the next morning. Abby admits to dancing in the forest, but didn't attempt witchcraft. "Uncle, we did dance; let you tell them I confessed it - and I'll be whipped if I must be. But they're speaking of witchcraft. Betty's not witched." (Act 1) -
Tituba is accused of witchcraft by Abigail. Tituba then goes on to accuse other people of witchcraft.
-
John Proctor and Abigail talk about their affair. Abigail says that she is still in love with him. "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby." (Act 1) -
Mary Warren becomes an official of the court. She acts as a 'mole' for the court. She reports back conversations she's heard and things she has seen. "I must go to Salem, Goody Proctor; I am an official of the court!" (Act 2)
-
Mary Warren gives Elizabeth a poppet she has made in court as something to do to keep her busy. Though, Abigail may have told Mary to make the poppet and give it to Elizabeth as a way to frame her. It is just a spectacle though. "I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing." (Act 2) -
Ezekiel Cheever and Marshal Herrick arrive at the Proctor house with a warrant for Elizabeth's arrest. Ezekiel finds the poppet and discovers a needle in the doll. He said that Abigail has charged Elizabeth with attempted murder because she got stabbed with a needle while eating at Parris's house. After Mary confesses it was her doll and she stored the needle in it for safe keeping, and that Abigail was next to her when she did it, Elizabeth is still taken into custody.
-
Elizabeth lies by testifying that John Proctor did not commit adultery with Abigail. Even though she has not forgiven him, he is still her husband, and she will remain loyal to him. This dooms them in the end, as John has already admitted to it. -
As Mary is afraid of Abigail, she changes her testimony and betrays John by accusing him of witchcraft. Some of the girls became angry with Mary and began to accuse her of being a witch because she lied and told the high court that the girls were lying and that they ultimately saw the devil. "Mary Warren, pointing at Proctor: You're the Devil's man!" (Act 3)
-
Abigail is scared to be in Salem. Parris says that Abigail should fear to stay in Salem. With this, she steals money from Parris, her uncle, and flees town with Mercy. They are not seen since.
-
John orally confessed to witchcraft, but refuses to accuse anyone else. Danforth tells him that he needs to sign a confession paper for the court to have proof. He sign this paper, but when he realizes the paper will be hung at the church for everyone to see, he rips the paper up.
-
After Danforth's offer, John makes the decision to get hung rather than have a signed piece of paper confessing what he has done for the whole town to see. John's decision to get hung was not for nothing. If he died, his family names were not soiled, and he got to protect his name.
