    The Magna Carta

    The Magna Carta
    The nobles rebelled against King John. They forced him to sign the agreement. The document protects the nobel's privilages and control. The document also allowed certain rights to all land holders. These rights inculded equal treatment under the law and trials by one's peer. It guarentees that no one would be above this law.
  • The Mayflower Compact

    A group of colonist from England know as the Pilgrims arrived in America. They built a settlement called Plymouth. The Mayflower reached America. The Plymouth colonist realized they needed rules for themselves if they were to survive in a new land. They drew up a written plan for the goverment.
  • Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

    Some Pilgrims were being persecuted for their own religious beliefs. They left Massahusetts and colonized Connecticut. The Pilgrims developed America's first written constitution.
  • Glorious Revolution

    Parliament removed King Jame II from the throne and invited his daughter Mary. A peaceful transfer of power. No ruler would have more power than Parliament.
  • English Bill of Rights

    The document further restricted the monarchs power. It also guarentees free elections to Parliament, the right to a fair trial andn the elimination of cruel and unusual punishments.
  • John Locke

    He said that people were born with free, equal, and independent. Possed rights = natural rights. No government could take away life, liberty and property from people.
  • Baron de Montesquieu

    He had the idea about dividing the branches of government into different parts to balance so that no one gets too much power.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau

    He argued that the people alone had the rights to determine how they should be governed. He also wrote in "The Social Contract" and it published in 1762.
