As Celie grows close with Mr. Celie now is independent emotionally,spiritually, and financially opens a clothing store.Sophia (who remarries Harpo) starts work there. Nettie returns to America with her husband and children. Shugs indiscretions no longer break Celie's heart. Celie and Nettie grow old with each other around, but Celie says she's never felt younger. -
1935 BCE
Pants.
While Shug is on the road Celie starts to make pants for everyone around her. She slowly is empowering herself and learning she doesn't need a man to oppress her and she becomes very independent. This is a huge character development from the beginning of the book. But, she starts writing to Nettie who is overseas in a small village learning about the ways of the village people. -
1935 BCE
No woman no cry.
Shug on the road finds a young man whose a jazz flute player. When Shug comes home to Celie she expresses her love for this man. Celie becomes numb and wooden again. Celie writes to Nettie expressing how bad it hurts her heart and wishes Nettie was there for her. Shug leaves with this flute player. Surprisingly, this is when Celie and Mr become close. For they both love Shug. Celie and Mr spend a lot of time together, Celie realizes he has changed. -

Celie's Advice to Squeak.
Celie is seeing how unfair the treatment is to women. She asks Squeak her real name. She says Mary Agnes. Celie told her to tell Harpo what her name was next time he called her squeak. And she does. She encourages the woman around her to stand up for themselves. -

Sophia.
Harpo the eldest son of Mr married a woman named Sophia who was full of spice. She took the kids to live with her without Harpo. Harpo decided to make the house into a dancing bar/place. When Sophia returns Harpo has another woman named Squeak (That's her nickname). Sophia starts to sass with the mayor and he slaps her. She hits the Mayor back for hitting her and is sentenced to prison. But, prior to this she also fought Squeak leaving her bloody and missing teeth. Sophia is sent to prison. -

Baby Steps.
Slowly Celie starts empowering herself. The first step she took was she noticed self awareness (ex. she hates the way she dresses). She is perceived as weak from the men who want to oppress her. She starts responding in n assertive manner. While her relationship grows with Shug. -
1920 BCE
Life with mr
Nettie runs away from their father and finds refugee in Mr and Celie's house. While Mr takes interest in Nettie, Harpo ( Mr's oldest son) wants marry Sophia a very feisty young woman. But, Sophia's parents don't want her to marry Harpo because of the murder of his mom. Sophia gets pregnant and her and Harpo get married. -

Advice to Harpo
Celie was with Mr and Harpo talking about hitting Sophia. Mr states that he hits his kids and Celie so they know who's in charge. Without thinking Celie says he should hit Sophia. Harpo gets a black eye trying to hit Sophia when she got "Out of line". Sophia asks Celie if she told Harpo to hit her. Celie apologizes and says it was wrong. Sophia tells Celie if a man ever hits her again, she'd kill him. -

Like a tree.
Celie tells God she finds it easier to be like a tree. She says she's grown numb. And being "wooden" is less dangerous. -

Shug Avery
Ever since Celie was young she was drawn to a singer named Shug Avery. When Shug becomes ill and no one wants to take her in Mr does because him and Shug have a romantic past. Shug stays with them and slowly, Celie becomes imitate with Shug. Many people disagree with Shug staying with them. Like Mr's brother Tobias. This is an important part because slowly Celie is finding out who she is through Shug. -

Her marriage to Mr.
Celie is told Nettie her sister is to be wed. Celie wants to prove she can be pretty and wants to marry ( just to get out of her fathers grasp) and she wants to stay in school despite her dad saying shes too dumb. Mr makes up his mind and weds Celie. But, Celie spends her wedding in a bandage from Mr's son throwing a rock at her. -
1915 BCE
Olivia.
Celie is out in town when she catches glimpse of a young girl who is her daughter her father forced her to give away. She asks the young girls mother a bunch of questions about her daughter. Celie is feeling nostalgic and wondering what life would be with her daughter, which she would have named Olivia. -
1910 BCE
The first entry into Celie's letters to God.
The first entry Celie expresses how she doesn't understand how her father can rape her and be okay with it. She says how he's forcing her to keep quiet about the matter and she is now pregnant with her second child. -

Nettie.
Celie and her sister Nettie was pretty close, when Celie is chosen to marry Mr. she leaves Nettie behind with her abusive father and worries about her very much. -
Moving in with Shug
Time speeds up and Sophia is released from prison and works for the Mayors wife as a maid. Celie moves out of Mr's house (Which shows shes learning about independence and breaking free from the oppression) and moves to Kentucky with Shug.
