  • Lincoln's First Election

    The republican convention chose Abraham Lincoln as the party's presidential nominee. Lincoln was appealing becasue of his growing reputation for eloquence and his position on slavery.
  • South Secedes

    11 states from the South seceded from the union after Lincoln's election.
  • First Income Tax

    In 1861 the government levied an income tax for the first time, with rates that eventually rose to 10 percent on incomes above $5000.
  • Shiloh

    With about 40,000 men Grant now advanced south along the Tennessee River to sieze control of railroads lines vital to the Confederacny. Leading to the Battle of Shiloh.
  • 1st Confiscation Act

    Declared that all slaves used for "insurrectionary" purposes ( that is, in support of the Confederate military effor) would be considered freed.
  • 1st Battle of Bull Run

    Also known as the first battle of Manassas, McDowell almost succeeded in dispersing the Confederate Forces.
  • Antietam

    Antietam Creek was where the bloodiest single-day engagment of the war, McClellan's 87,000-man army repeatedly attacked Lee's force of 50,000, within enormous casualties on both sides.
  • Trent Affair

    Two Confederate diplomats,James M. Mason and John Slidell, had slipped through the then-ineffective Union blockade to Havana, Cuba, where they borded an English steamer the Trent, for England.
  • National Draft Law instated

    A requierment of three years of service for those ages 18 and 35.
  • Monitor v. Merrimac

    A battle between Virginia and Minnesota with a steam boat and a raft.
  • Homestead/Morill Land Grand Act

    Permitted any citizen or perspective citizen to claim 160 acres of public land and to purchase it for a small fee after living on it for 5 years. Morill Act was the same but used the finance to support public education buildings.
  • 2nd Confiscation Act

    Declared free the slaves of persons aiding and supporting the the insurrection (weather or not the slaves themselves were doing so) and which also authorized the president to employ African Americans, including freed, as soldiers.
  • Harper's Ferry

    A battle fought in West Virginia.
  • Writ of Habeas Corpus suspended

    A court oreder directing that anyonr arrested be brought before the court to see weather there is sufficient evidence to hold the person for trial.
  • Emancipation Proclimation

    Declared forever free slaves in all areas of the Confederacy exept those already under Union control: Tennessee, western Virginia, and southeren Louisiana.
  • Vicksburg

    Grant began a campaign to win control of the final peice of the Mississippi River still controlled by the Confederacy. To do that requiered capturing the Southern stronghold at Vicksburg- a well defended city sitting above the river.
  • Capture of Atlanta

    Sherman took Atlanta on Sep. 2. News of the victory electified the North and helped unite the previously divided Republican Party behind President Lincoln.
  • Lincoln's Re-election

    Lincoln led in the popular vote was modest by 10 percent.
  • March to Sea

    The march across Georgia destroying everthing in its path.
  • Surrender at Appomattox

    Grant surrendered what was left of his forces at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the head as he attended a play.
  • Confederate States of America Established

    The last battle was May 5 afer the civil war ended The Union established all the states. (Confederacy)
  • 13th Amendment

    Abolished slavery as an institution in all parts of the United States.
