    The Montgomery Bus Boycott
    The Montgomery Bus Boycott started in a response to Rosa Parks being arrested fro refusing to give up her seat to a white man. During this boycott African Americans refused to ride the bus and started to walk places and formed car pools. Key figures included Dr. King and the montgomery improvement assosciation. This boycott would lead a trial in court over segregated seating on transportation and ruled it a violation of the 14th ammendment.
  • The Little Rock 9

    The Little Rock 9
    During the crisis of little rock the school board had recieved the order that nine african americans could join the all whitle Central High school. Arknsas governor ordered troops to prevent these 9 from entering alongside the whites that boycotted. The people involved were the 9 african american students. Eisenhower had decided the violence was unneccesary so he ordered troops to little rock and made the federal authority take the troops to the school.

    Civil rights act of 1957
    The civil rights act of 1957 was the first civil rights act passed since reconstruction. It was made to protect the votes of african americans. Eisenhower decided to pass this act to protect the african americans votes and have the hopes of more african americans to become republicans. Congross members such as Lydon Johnson allowed the act to be passed. This act would lead to the creation of the civil rights department within the departmant of justice
  • The sit-in movement

    On february 1,1960 four african american college students named J. McNeil,E Blair Jr., D. Richmond, and F. McCain all participated in the sit-in at a local dinner. This led to more african american students close to 300 joined in on the movement to be treated equally and served fairly no matter the race.More sit-ins through out the country would result/
  • Freedom riders

    Freedom riders
    During this time it was illegal to segregate transportation service but it was still done. The key participants in the freedom riders was James Farmer, the committee of racial equality, among other african americans and white volunteers. they became the freedom fighters and decided that they would ride the buses into the segregated south. by doing this mobs of white people and the kkk would attack the buses and the people ultimately beating them to where there was alot of blood.

    James Meriden and the desegregation of the university of Mississippi
    In September of 1962 a man named James Meredith had tried to apply to the university of Mississippi. Since he was denied he filed law suits in which he won with the help of the NAACP. AFTER HE FINALLY ENTOLLED MKBS BROKE OUT AND MANY WERE INJURED AND TWO WERE DEAD. this event became well known and with the intervention of the federal government finally became desegregated.
  • Protests in Birmingham

    Protests in Birmingham
    The protest in Birmingham had started over racial segregation, racial discrimination, and the browser vs Gayle case. The people involved included MLK. ACMHR, SCLC, and the Birmingham polic and fire department. Since Birmingham was one of the most segregated cities people decided to boycott business until they decided to desegregate them. During this campaign many people were harmed through water hoses and the police dogs. During this time mlk,p and even children were arrested for protesting.

    The March on Washington had over 200000 people who attended including the NAACP, Martin Luther King, and the southern Christian leadership. Conference. On this day people rallied together to fight for the economic and racial equality for African Americans. This civil rights March was to advocate passage on the civil rights act. It was also the March for jobs and freedom. On this day mlk gave his famous I have a dream speech on racial equality.

    The civil rigths act had been passed by lyndon b johnson and the senate and made into a law. It gave federal power to prevent racial discriminations It gave all citizens no matter the race access to public facilities without discrimination. It would also establish the EEOC. This law happened because Johnson wanted to commit himslef to the civil rights mvoemeent.

    In selma MLK and SCLC had decided to make that the place to establish voting rights for the african american community. It had happened whent he sheriff armed many whites and terrorized the african americans into not voting. 2000 people were arrested in selma for demonstrating. KIng and the SNCC activists would march from selma to montogomery. at the end og the march what is known as bloody sunday occured when demonstators were attacked by state troopers.

    This act would be passed and gave the u.s attorney genral the right to send federal examiners to register qualified voters. this would bypass local officials and not allow them to deny african american voters. It also suspended discrimantory test. It was passed by congress and lyndon b johnson. It was meant to get rid of stae and federal barriers and end discrimination.

    On April 4th,1969 Maartin luth king was shot by james earl ray. He was in memphis supporting an african american sanitation strike. After he was shot riots broke out in over 100 cities.after his death the civil rights act of 1968 was passed.
