The Montgomery bus boycott was sparked by the arrest of a black woman named Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat to a white man in the front of the bus. This then started the boycott for 381 days Afican Americans refused to ride mintgomery busses. The boycott was lead by Martin Luthur King Jr. a rising name in the natonal fight to stop segregation.

Nine African American student enrolled in little rock central high school, and were prevented from entering the racially segregated school by the governor of Arkansas. This event then started the push for desgregating high schools. They were later allowed to enter after President Eisenhower had intervented. This led to the brown vs BOE.

In 1957, President Eisenhower sent Congress a proposal for civil rights legislation. The result was the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the first civil rights legislation since Reconstruction. The new act established the Civil Rights Section of the Justice Department and empowered federal prosecutors to obtain court injunctions against interference with the right to vote.
