    Benjamin Mays was a minister, humanitarian, and activist. He was known for being a very influential civil rights leader and for playing a role in desegregating Atlanta. He had worked with many important such as Martin Luther King Jr. Mays was the 6th president of Moorehouse College.
  • Herman Talmadge

    Herman Talmadge
    Herman Talmadge was the son of governor Euene Talmadge. He was a politician who served as Georgia's governor for a short amount of time and was one of three people involved in the Three Governor's Controversy.
  • Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Jr.
    Martin Luther KIng Jr is known as one of the greatest influences in the African-American civil rights movement. He used nonviolent and peaceful methods to protest and stand for African-American rights. He helped organize the March on Washington whch is where he gave the "I Have A Dream" speech.     Brown V. Board of Education
    Brown V. Board of Education was a court case in which they decided that segregation in schools was illegal. Oliver Brown who wanted his daughter to attend better school conditions brought this case to court.     John Sibley was a businessman, lawyer, and the president of UGA. During this, Governor Vandiver chose Sibley to head his commission in which they were trying to decide on Georgia's opinion to integrate schools or not.

    Admission of Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA
    Holmes and Hunter were the first black students ever to be admitted to the University of Georgia. They both were very succesful and had the qualifications but were never accepted until this time. They were only ever denied because of their race and this made a large impact on the civil rights movement.

  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    On this day, thousands of activists gathered in Washington D.C. to fight for "jobs and freedom". Martin Luther King Jr. gave his most famous speech here. This led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

    The Civil Rights Act forbade discrimination on the basis of race or sex in hiring, promoting, or firing. This was signed into law by president Lyndon B. Johnson.
