  • Father Sues School Board

    A 8 yr. old black child was not able to attend a elementary school because of segregation. Linda Brown's father sues the school board. The Supreme Court agress to hear the case.
  • 1953 - Highlander Folk School

    Highlander Folk School issues invitations to civil rights workers
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    The Supreme Court decides that "separate but equal" schools are inherently unequal. This makes segregated schools illegal.
  • 1955 - Black Boy Killed for Whistling

    A 14-year-old African-American boy from Chicago, is killed near Money, Mississippi. He was illegidly whistling at a white women.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1857

    Act that authorizes the Justice Department to investigate cases of African Americans being denied voting rights in the South.
  • Greensboro Sit In

    Four African-American students create a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, on February 1
  • King Announces hes leaving Albany

    On August 10th, King announces that he is leaving albany and on September 10th the Supreme Court rules that the university of Mississipi is required admit african american students.
  • King is Arrested

    Birmingham police arrest King for demonstrating without a city permit. King writes the letter "letter from a Birmingham jail."
  • March on Washington

    August 28th, the March on Washington for jobs and freedom was held in D.C., with nearly 250,000 people participating. This is where King has his "I have a Dream" speech.
  • Kennedy is Assasinated

    Kennedy is assasinated which his succesor used the nations anger to push through civil rights legislation.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    On July 2nd, Congress passed the civil rights act of 1964, which banned discrimination in employment and public places.
  • Malcom X Assasination

    Malcom X is assasinated in Harlem by Islam operatives
  • Riot in Watts

    A riot breaks out in Watts, between a white traffic officer and an African American man accused of drinking and driving.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    April 11, 1968, President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968 that prohibited discrimination by sellers or renters of property.
