The Cell Theory

  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Discovered cells by looking at a cork underneath a miscroscope. Named them cells as they looked like cells that munks lived in. This was the first time cells were ever seen.
  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

    Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Developed high quality microscope lenses which he used to look at pond water. He observed tiny organisms in it -- bacteria. While Hooke only viewed dead cell walls, Leeuwenhooke viewed live ones.
  • Henri Dutrochet

    Henri Dutrochet
He discovered osmosis after pursuing education based on plants and animals; Dutrochet was inspired to do this after realizing plant and animal cells are similar.
  • Felix Dujardin

    Felix Dujardin
Proposed many living organisms are composed of a single cell. Also noticed that the internal structure of all cells are similar. While previous scientists believed the cell was hollow, Dujardin was first to state that they were filled with a jelly-like substance.
  • Matthias Schleiden

    Matthias Schleiden
Botanist Matthias Schleidenfound that plants were made of cells. It later changes the model because it leads to the discovery that cells are the building blocks of life.
  • Thoedor Schwann

    Thoedor Schwann
After finding nuclei in animal cells, Schwann stated that all living things are made up of cells. It was previously thought that only plants were made of cells. The model was changed since cells are now known to be found in all life.
  • Rudolph Virchow

    Rudolph Virchow
Virchow discovered that new cells come from old cells. He came about this discovery when he saw a disease replicate itself. The model changed because it now knows where and how cells are made.
