At the beggining of the 18th century, cars didn't exist. People travelled in horse carriages or on foot.
In 1769 Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot invented a type of car with three wheels, the Fardier. It used a steam drive system and it travelled at four kilometres an hour. This car could pull 4,5 tons.
It was designed to transport the artillery of the French army. -
In 1832, the Scottish Robert Anderson invented an electric car, but the batteries weren't rechargeable. This car could reach 6 kilometres per hour downhill. -
Some years later, in 1885, Karl Benz patented a car with petrol. This car was called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. The vehicle reached a maximum speed of 16 kilometres per hour. -
In the 20th century cars were better, more modern and more confortable. In 19th century, only very rich people had cars, because they were very expensive.
But in 20th century, assembly line production became popular and cars were less expensive.
For example, the Ford Model T was a cheap automobile produced by Henry Ford's Ford Motor Company from 1908 to 1927. -
Nowadays, cars are faster, bigger, safer and more confortable. Practically everyone has one and there are a lot brands of cars. Cheap, expensive, with petrol or electric.
Cars with petrol can go easily more than 100 kilometres per hour and electric cars have rechargeable batteries and its autonomy is quite good.
