    On 19 February 1942 mainland Australia came under attack for the first time when Japanese forces mounted two air raids on Darwin. The two attacks were a failure, because the two navy aircraft carriers were out on a practice mission and didnt get blown up. The two raids killed at least 243 people and between 300 and 400 were wounded

    At 11.30 am on February 20, 1942, a day after the first Japanese air raids on Darwin, Koolama was off the coast of the Kimberley, when it was attacked by a Japanese Kawanishi H6Kflying boat near Cape Londonderry. Three or four bombs landed near the ship but caused no damage.

    On 22 March 1942, a single Japanese aircraft was sent to Katherine to get information for a larger raid that was coming, it was shot down. Nine "Betty" bombers of the Japanese Navy attacked later that day. Damage at Katherine was minimal. This was the most southern Japanese bombing raid in the Northern Territory during WW2. 1 Aborigonal was injured and 1 was killed.

    On 25 of July 1942, two aircrafts were circling Townsville. When Townsville realised that there was a danger they turned off the towns power and used spotlights to find the planes. The two planes got away.They then returned at 12.40am and dropped 15 of their 250 kg bombs near the Townsville wharves where three vessels were berthed.
