In 1776, Benjamin Franklin and the rest of the committee submit their suggestion of the design, which included the motto "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one), for the Great Seal to congress. Although their design was not approved, Charles Thomson added their motto to the Great Seal he created in 1782.
