Designed by Horikoshi Jiro it was the first carrier based fighter capable of its land-based opponents. It was designed to specifications written in 1937, was first tested in 1939, and was placed in production and in operation in China in 1940.

Coral Sea

Four days of Battles between Japanese and american aircraft carriers resulted in 70 Japanese and 66 American warplanes destroyed.The battle of Coral sea marked the first air naval battle in history as none of the carriers fired at each other.It allowed the planes taking off from there deck to do the battling.

Battle of Midway

One of the most important naval victories.Code breakers where able to decipher Japanese naval codes.It allowed American leaders to anticipate Japanese maneuvers. The U.S navy was able to launch a surprise attack on larger Japanese fleet in the area.
