  • Chapter I-V, 1-22

    Leonce Pontellier rents a cottage in Grand Isle. Robert Lebrun, Madame Lebrun's son, talks with Edna, Leonce's wife. Edna is not happy anymore. Edna is forced into putting a smile on her face so no one will suspect anything. Leonce is not happy with Edna because of how she is raising their children. Edna doesn't feel at home with all the Creole's. Robert devotes himself to being Edna's attendant, but she declines.

  • Chapter VI-IX, 23-44

    Edna begins to think about her life. Edna starts to grow fond of Adele. Then it talks about how Edna was never really close to anyone growing up. Adele then talks to Robert about his intentions with Edna and that he should back off. Madame Lebrun and Robert throw a Saturday night party at their house.

    Edna went down to the beach with the rest of the party and swam on her own. Edna was not a good swimmer though. After she gets out of the water she walked back home by herself and Robert ran to accompany her. He stayed there til Leonce came home. The next day Robert accompanied Edna to Sunday mass.

  • Chapters XV-XIX, 69-97

    Robert suddenly leaves for Mexico without telling anyone his plans. Edna is upset by this and wonders why he suddenly leaves. Robert leaves before he confesses his true feelings for Edna. Robert writes to Madame Lebrun. Edna finds out Leonce saw Robert in New Orleans right before he left. Edna and Leonce return to New Orleans, where their relationship changes. Edna stops being social for her husbands sake. Instead of excepting callers, she draws and paints.

  • Chapters XX-XXIV, 98-122

    Edna visits Madame Lebrun and Victor to get Mademoiselle Reisz new address. Edna finds out Robert has not enclosed a letter for her. Victor and Madame Lebrun realize something is different with Edna. Mademoiselle Reisz tells Edna she recieved a letter from Robert all about Edna. Leonce then talks to Doctor Mandelet about Edna's odd behavior. Edna's dad comes to town and Edna starts to cheer up.

    Alcee Arobin comes into Edna's life in place of Robert. Edna then discovers Robert is coming home soon from Mademoiselle Reisz's letter. Alcee then kisses Edna. She has one regret and that regret is that the kiss was not out of love. Edna then moves around the corner into a new house.

    Edna throws a dinner party to celebrate moving into the "Pigeon house". Alcee stays with her after the party and escorts her back to the house. Leonce writes a letter back to Edna expressing how bad it was for her to move. Robert returns home. He quickly discovers a picture of Alcee and begins to ask questions. Edna then asks him to stay for dinner. Alcee comes over and starts talking to Robert, which made things awkward. Alcee and Edna then have a physical intimacy.

    Robert and Edna kiss when they see each other again. They were interrupted by Adele calling Edna saying that shes in labor and wants Edna there. Robert confesses the only reason he left was to escape his love for Edna. Edna then goes to the beach one day after being with Victor and Mariequita and commits suicide. She drowns in the ocean.
