George Washington
George Washington was our very first president he served for two terms. Many people were hopeful he would run for a third term. Washignton denied to run again because of an orderly transition of authority is to prevent king-like power. Not only did he decline for the good of the country he declined for the good of himself because of all the attacks on him and his cabinet. -
Ulysses S. Grant
When coming to the end of his second term Grant tossed around the option of running for a third term. Grant, who was a Republican, and the House of Representatives was held by democrats. The House held the power to pass a denouncing of a third term as a violation of political tradition. -
Theodore Roosevelt
Roosevelt came to be president after Mckinley was assassinated. He went on to serve the rest of that term and then ran for reelection in 1905. He was successfully reelcted and after his second term reported that he would not run again for a third term. Although he has an argument with William Taft and decides run against him for the Republican nomination. With the split that Roosevelt causes allows Woodrow Wilson, the Demorcratic candidate to become president. -

Beiing elected in 1933 he helped America recover through the depression. During that time he saved many Americans and created many different organizations to help citizens. For those reasons he stayed very popular with the public and decided to run again for a third term with the thought of WWII was coming fast. Running for a third term was very rare but running for a fourth term was just crazy in political terms. Although he does succeed in being re-elected again he dies 4 months into the term -
Ratification Process
Following the death of FDR the Republicans take over the House and make a decision to create an Amendment regarding the amount of terms a president can last. Harry Truman took over after the death of Roosevelt and Congress passed the proposal of the 22nd Amendment. They sent it to all the states and gave them a 7 year deadline to have it ratified. -
Dwight Eisenhower
Eisenhower was elected and had served two full terms and he was officially the first president to be consitutionally denied for a third term. -

Attempts at Repeal
Both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton created bills in attempts to repeal the 22nd Amendment but, Congress denied both bills.
