Tess's mother convinces her to go and claim kin from Mrs. D'Urberville. Tess begins her journey soon arriving in Trantridge, and saw a new mansion. The D'Urbervilles were not really that they were Strokes. There she meet Alec D'Urberville who was very creepy, and he said that she could come work there and take care of Mrs. D'Urberville's birds.

Tess felt uneasy about the D'Urbervilles, but her mother still convinced her to go. Due to the fact that "Mrs. D'Urberville" sent a letter that she wants Tess to work with her birds. It was said that the letters handwriting was masculine, probably hinting to the fact that that the letter was actually from Alec. Tess was still guilty about the horse she is convince by her mother to go but John didn't want to send her.

Joan forces Tess to dress up well for the D'Urbervilles. Tess loads her box into a cart, and Joan and Jack begin to get a bad feeling about all this. Another cart rides up, where Alec is sat. All through the ride Alec harassed Tess. Until she was able to get off the cart and walk and Alec continued to be a creep. Then they arrived in Trantridge

When Tess arrives Mrs. D'Urberville is unaware to the "relations" they have, and give a Tess the job of taking care of her birds. To be exact she have to whistle to some of them. So she is sent to practice whistling, she is unable to. So Alec comes creeping up on her, and teaches her how to whistle after reluctantly excepts after declining multiple times.

After going out with some of the working folk, they begin being very mean and harassing her. Alec rides up to Tess, swoops her away and rides to The Chase. Where Alec would ride for awhile and Tess would realize how far they have road, and later Alec would drug and rape her. In October.

Tess travels back to Marlott, first by cart with Alec, then she walks with a painter who paints quotes from the bible on boards. Then when she arrived in Marlott she would give birth to her baby and work on the fields.

Tess's baby grows sick, and she decides to preform a baptism on it late at night. She is to young to deal with this. Later that night it dies, and she goes to the priest of the village who thinks for her as a sinner and tells her that the baby will be burning in hell. The next day her family buries Sorrow.

During her time in Talbothay's Dairy, she begins to fall in love with Angel Clare who is also falling in love with her. Angel is the young man that Tess met at the May day dance. Angel is working to become a farmer.
