Jack's Discovery
While walking on a road, a man calls Jack Darbyfield "Sir John". When he asks about it, the man says Durbyfield comes from a noble family, the D'urbervilles. After hearing this news, Jack begins to act arrogant and tells a nearby boy to run errands for him. -
Mayday Dance
All the girls in the village are dancing during a may day celebration. A noble young man, Angel, comes by and dances with one of the girls. Tess feels bad that Angel did not dance with her. -
Prince Dies
Tess has to deliver beehives to the market early in the morning because her father is too drunk to. She takes a carriage and the family horse, Prince, but she falls asleep while driving and Prince dies in an accident with a mail cart. -
Tess' Visit
Feeling guilty for Prince's death, Tess agrees to at least visit the D'Urbervilles. She meets Alec, who is Mrs. D'Urberville's son outside of their mansion. He says he can help her, and when she returns home, she receives a letter that she can have a job tending to the chickens. -
Tess Leaves
After not being able to find any work near her home, Tess reluctantly agrees to live at the D'Urbervilles house to work. Mrs. Durbyfield dresses Tess up very nicely, but worries afterward that Alec will take advantage of her. -
Tess Goes Out
Tess is at the fair with some of her drunk friends and are walking home. They start to argue because they are jealous of Tess for getting Alec's attention. Tess becomes annoyed and allows Alec to take her home on horseback. -
Alec's Assault
Alec and Tess are lost in the fog on their way home, and they stop so Alec can get his bearings. Alec lays down his coat for Tess to sit down. When Alec returns, he finds Tess asleep, and takes advantage of her. (SA) -
Tess' Discovery
After spending a few weeks with Alec, Tess realizes that she does not have feelings for Alec. She then decided to leave and go home. -
Sin's
On her way home Tess encounters an artist painting Bible versus on a wall, and wonders whether it was her fault. She wants to know that even though she did not commit the sin, would God still see it as her sin. -
Paranoia
While Tess was walking around in the town, she believes that the people were watching her and talking about her. As if they knew what happened to her and blame her for it. -
Babies
The baby that Tess has with Alec had gotten sick. She was very worried that her baby might die without being baptized. Tess decides to baptize her baby herself. She then names him Sorrow. -
Sorrow Dies
After Tess baptized Sorrow, he died the next morning. Tess is left wondering if the baptism was enough to send her baby to heaven and get buried in the church graveyard. -
Burial
Tess asks the Parson that since she baptized her baby, was it enough to allow her son to get a christian burial. The Parson says that he cannot bury the child himself, but she can. So she buries him at the corner of the church graveyard at night. -
Milkmaid
Tess gets the chance to become a milkmaid at the Talbothays Dairy. She takes the opportunity. -
Reunited
When Tess arrives at the Talbothays Dairy, she recognizes a man, who she noticed back at the May Day dance. Tess learns that the man is Angel Clare, the sons of a very well respected clergyman. -
Butter Love
One day at the farm the butter would not churn, everyone is worried because butter really sells in the farm, it makes them the most amount of money. Mrs. Crick suggests that the reason why the butter is not churning is because someone is in love. -
Garlic
Dairyman Crick has gotten a complaint that the butter tastes funny, he then realizes that it is due to the fact that the cows have somehow been feeding on garlic, which has gotten its way onto the field. -
Infatuation
While the farmhand are on the field looking for garlic plants that have somehow gotten on the field, and are getting eaten by the cows causing their milk to taste funny. Angel is always finding a way to put himself next to Tess although she tries to get away from him. -
Falling in Love
Tess and the other milkmaids decide to walk to church only to find the road is flooded. Due to them wearing their fancy Sunday shoes they do not want to walk in the puddle. Luckily for them Angel is walking about and offers to carry each of them across. He leaves Tess for last, and takes the most time carrying her over. Which does not go unnoticed by the other milkmaids. -
Young Love
Angel admits to Tess that he loves her while they are in the field milking cows. He also apologizes for hugging her by surprise.
