Tess of D'Urbervilles Timeline

  • May Day

    May Day is the beginning of Spring where the young ladies were seen in white dresses dancing with suitors.
  • The Realization

    Jack finds out that his lineage may trace back to wealth. He is excited that his family might be able to live outside of poverty
  • Rollivers

    Tess' father and mother both go to a local inn named "Rollivers" to spend time after learning the news of their sudden new heritage. While enjoying time at the Inn, Tess' family decides that they will send Tess to wealthy family members in order to "claim kin"The night ends with Tess and her younger brother, Abraham, leading their parents back to their cottage in the middle of the night.
  • Death of Prince

    While Tess went to make money for the family the family's horse, Prince, was injured and died.
  • Tess goes to mansion

    After the death of the family horse, Prince, Tess was sent to the D'Urbervilles mansion to claim kin in hopes of getting the family a new horse.
  • Tess' return back to Marlott

    When Tess returns to Marlott her mother informs her of Alec D'Urberville and his mother, Mrs. D'Urbervilles invitation to come work for them at their mansion. She is persuaded into taking the position.
  • Alec takes Tess to Trantridge

    Alec rides to Marlott to retrieve Tess and bring her back to his family home. This is where she will work for him and his mother.
  • Tess works for the D'Urbervilles

    Tess learns her job in the mansion tending to the family's fowls.
  • Trip to the market

    Tess enjoys her visits to the market and one day when she arrives it is instead a fair. She spends time with her friends.
  • The Chase

    Alec brings Tess home from the market and gets lost through the woods. It is here where he sexually takes advantage of Tess.
  • Tess quits the mansion

    Tess quits the mansion and returns to Marlott.
  • The birth of Sorrow

    Tess gives birth to the child conceived with Alec. Tess baptises Sorrow at home before his death so she would be able to bury him with a Christian ceremony.
  • Chooses a new life for herself

    Tess has changed a lot since her time in Trantridge and she is not the same young girl as before. Tess receives a letter to go start a position as a dairy maid and she takes this opportunity to start a new life
