  • Temperance movement

    Around the 1830's is when the temperance movemnt began. It was an organized effort to encourage moderation and rebel towards the use of alcohol. The use, sale or transportaiton of alcohol was banned nationwide. Many people mostly women were againnst it. The temperance movement ended when the 18th admendment to the constitution was passed.
  • Laws

    In 1851 the fiest prohibiton law was passed in Maine. A man named Neal Down helped create this law, which prohibited the sale of all alcoholic beverages excpet for medical uses. Many people rebled and opposition to the law turned violent. And also by now 13 states have already enacted prohibition legislation.
  • Prohibition Party

    The National Prohibition Party was founded. John Russell, who was born in Michigan was the Nation Committe Chairman. The Prohibition Party is the third oldest party in The United States and its best known for its's opposition to selling or consuming of alchoholic beverages. This party also earned 519 votes in 2012 and is viewed as extremly conservative. They are constantly enforcing more laws against alchohol, gambling, etc.
  • Prohibition in Kansas

    Kansas is the first state ever to have Prohibiton in its state constitution. Also during the territorial period in Kansas, Prohibition became a leading and social issue. The temperance movement was now organized and had influenced throughout the state. The alchohol laws of Kansas were and still are some of the strictest laws in almost all of the United States.Kansas voters approved an amendment to the Kansas Constitution that prohib all manufacture and sale of alchohol throughout the state.
  • The 18th Admendment

    The Volstead act passes the United States Congress and establishes the enforcement of Prohibition on October. 28th. The 18th Admendment is ratified by 36 states and goes into effect on the federal level on January 29th. Almost immediately after the admendent was passed oraganizations formed to repel against it. People could get sent to jail for owning any item designed to manufacture alchohol. You could still consume alcohol if prescribed by a doctor.
  • Taking effect

    In 1920 is when the 18th Admendment really took place.The anti prohiniton movement gained strength through the 1920's. Poeple really started rebeling against it. mothers really worried about their husbands and the men in thier lifes.
  • More jobs available

    The rise of bootleggers such as Al Capone in Chicagi highlight the darker side of prohibition. But as a result of legalizing alchohol, crime was actually reduced and many new jobs were created as the liquor industry expanded. This was especially important during the crash of the stock market in 1929. On May 28, 1929, Sabin founded the Womens organizaation for National Prohibition Reform. This attracted many former Prohibitionists to its ranks.
  • 21st Admendment

    This is the year that prohibition finally ended when the 21st admendment was made. This brought on a good change, buisnesses started to make money and the goverment benifited from the taxes. Many new jobs were created and the liquor industry expanded. To avoid alcohol abuse the state and county goverments made a licensing system to control how much alcohol is bieng sold or used. Now days laws on alcohol differ depending on what state you live in.
