TED 200 Public Education History

  • Northwest Ordinace of 1785

    Midwestern territories had to set aside a portion of land dedicated to the advancment of education. This created one-room district schools and eventually colleges for teachers and other skilled professionals. This event was important because it was the first in many steppingstones in the creation of the education system we now know.

    Establishment of organized school systems in the East

    Massachusetts and Connecticut led the charge in establishing free and accesssible education to all children.
    1826- Massachesetts Greant and General court enacts law that requires all cities and town to elect school committee to over see schools.
    1827-communities required to provide high school education for children
    1836-First state board of education created. Horace Mann appointed secretary.
  • Normal School

    First Normal School founded in Lexington, Massachusetts Important because this was the beginning of formal training for teachers.
  • Quincy School

    First "egg-crate" school. Important because beginning of separation by academic ability into separate rooms.(usually associated with age class). Many schools still utilize this plan.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Overturned Plessy v. Ferguson ruling of "Separate but Equal"
    Start of school desegregation.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    ESEA enlists federal governments help to provide equal educational opportunities for all children. Helps to assign special programs that compensate for the educational disadvantages of poor children.
  • "A Nation at Risk"

    Published reports that recommended more substantive academic subject matter, more requirements, higher standards, and tests to measure performance. Ultimatley let to No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

    George W. Bush signs act that hold schools accountable for universal standards and testing.
