  • The Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was made by the Soviet Union as a defensive agreement between Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and East Germany. This was a way to counter the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that included United States, Canada, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland
  • Rosa Park

    Rosa Park, similar to Sarah Key, was a African American woman who refused to give up her seat on a public seat. Unlike Sarah Key, when Rosa Park was arrested the activists rallied.
  • Civil Rights Act 1957

    The Civil Rights Act, an act that consisted in protecting the rights of the people, was the first of such measure to be passed since Reconstruction. Although the act was compromised and didn't have much of an impact, it still created the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Commission. This department was in charge of investigating racial discrimination. Most of all it was a clear sign that America would have to face the pressure that was building up from all the racial discrimination.
  • Sputnik goes in Orbit

    Sputnik was a Soviet satellite and also the first human-made satellite in Orbit. It was a enormous achievement that would be the beginning of the "Space Race." About two years later the Soviets became the first to have a human-made object on the moon.
  • Humans go to Space

    Yuri Gagarin, a Russian astronaut, was the first person launched to space. American astronaut, Alan Shepard, also reached space a month later.
  • Invasion on Bay of Pigs

    One of biggest embarrassments of Kennedy's administration, the invasion of the Bay of Pigs was a complete failure. The invasion was meet by Cuban soldiers and the invaders were taken prisoners.
  • Freedom Rides

    Beginning in May, the Freedom Rides consisted in African Americans rode buses in the South and refused to give up their seat. They faced much violence from angry mobs such as the KKK. These mobs burned buses and the beat the activists who attempted to escape. By November the Interstate Commerce Commission had to enforce integration on the interstate buses and trains.
  • First African American Enrolled in the University of Mississippi

    James Meredith, the first African American to enroll in the University of Mississippi, brought up many riots. U.S. Marshals and National Guard had to intervene to maintain order.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    As a response to the United States having a nuclear arsenal in Turkey, the Soviet Union deployed nuclear missiles in Cuba. On October 14, spy planes saw that Cuba was building a nuclear launch sight. By October 22, a national alert had been given in the U.S.. Ultimately, on October 28 the conflict was resolved in peace by having Cuba and Turkey remove their missiles and had the U.S. pledge to not attack Cuba.
  • March on Washington

    The activists that marched demanded civil rights, school integration, and an end to discrimination in workplaces. It was during this march that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the "I Have a Dream" speech that shook the world.
  • Civil Rights Act 1964

    In the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the federal government enforced school integration. This was based on the Brown decision, and if schools refused to do so the government threatened to remove funding. School integration grew immensely. This act also focused on integration of many other public places.
  • Watergate Scandal

    Five men were arrested because they were found inside the offices of the Democratic National Committee. Police had found them attempting to install sophisticated bugging equipment. They were thought to have been working for Nixon, but no direct evidence was found. The White House made a large cover up for this incident, such as giving out hush money. Nixon still was able to win his election but once a impeachment bill was approved he resigned
  • North and South Vietnam Sign Paris Peace Accords

    After almost ten year of war and millions of deaths, North and South Vietnam agreed to peace and lived under a communist government.
