    John Larson came up with the concept for a device that detected spikes in blood pressure, respiratory, and pulse rates when a person was undergoing questioning. He was working part time for the police department and earning his Ph.D. in physiology when he invented the lie detector test. It was helpful in busting criminals but is now deemed as not entirely accurate because some have the ability to "cheat" the test.
