The Draisine
The Draisine was created by Karl Drais in 1817.The Draisine was a two-wheeled vehicle that helped people travel by walking or gliding. It was the first version of a bicycle ever made. -
The Velocipede
Surprisingly enough, the velocipede was also created by Karl Drais. The velocipede added pedals to the front of the wheels. However, the velocipede was nicknamed "the boneshaker", because it was very uncomfortable to ride on. -
The Penny Farthing
After the velocipede, the penny farthing was created as an "upgrade". However, this bicycle was known to cause many accidents and injury. This is because of the large wheel found in the front of the vehicle which was supposed to be used for covering more distance. This version of the bicycle was created by Eugene Meyer. -
The High Wheel Tricycle
The High Wheel Tricycle was a type of bicycle that had three wheels. This invention was created by Louis Marx from Pennsylvania. The High Wheel Tricycle was created so that women could ride in dresses. -
The Safety Bicycle
This bicycle was invented by John Kemp Starley. The Safety Bicycle was created to add more compaction to the vehicle which enhanced an individuals' safety. Furthermore, this bicycle went back to the two-wheeled design. -
Brakes and Freewheel Bicycle.
This bicycle was created by William M. Farrow. This bicycle prevented the rear wheels from moving at the same speed as the pedals. This innovation was the first bicycle to feature cable caliper brakes. -
The Mountain Bike
The Mountain bike is the traditional and most seen bike we use nowadays. This bike allows the individual to take on more challenging terrain because of the addition of gears. The person who invented the mountain bike was Joe Breeze. -
The Electric Bicycle
The electric bicycle was invented in 1891 but not massed produced until the 1990s. This bicycle is powered by electricity which allows the bicycle to travel speeds up to 20 mph. The electric bicycle was invented by Michael Kutter from Switzerland.
