    King Charles I executed

    Due to political unrest in England, King Charles I was executed.
  • Colonial Population Growth

    The colonial population is estimated at 50,400.
  • Virginia Law

    In Virginia, the first law was passed to help define the nature of slavery in the colonies. Children were born into slavery.
  • King Phillip's War (1675-76)

    Another Native conflict arose in New England when Wampanoags, led by a native called Metacom, attacked British colonists in Swansea. It ended with the colonists putting King Phillip's head on a pole and showing it off.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    A group of colonists led by Nathaniel Bacon began openly attacking all Natives in the area through their claim of self-defense. The group disbanded when Bacon died of dysentery.
  • British Glorious Revolution

    The Revolution was peaceful and bloodless, resulting in it being called 'glorious.' The colonies rejoiced because the new monarch cemented Protestantism as the main British religion.

  • First Continental Congress convenes

    The First Continental Congress took place. This was a meeting of the delegates from the Thirteen Colonies. The meeting was convened to discuss the Intolerable Acts passed by the British Parliament.
  • Intolerable Acts anger the colonists

    To punish Boston and the colony of Massachusetts, the parliament passed a number of new Acts, known as the Intolerable Acts.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord are fought

    The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first armed engagement between British forces and the American revolutionaries.
  • Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Second Continental Congress

    This declaration said that the 13 American colonies were no longer under British rule and considered themselves as independent entities.
  • Battles of Saratoga lead to major American victory

    In the first battle, the British were victorious but they couldn’t break through American lines to achieve their actual objective.
    In the second battle, the American army was decisively victorious. The whole British army was surrounded and forced to surrender.
  • Treaty of Paris ends the American War of Independence

    Great Britain officially accepted its defeat and recognized the independence of the United States of America.
  • Publication of Federalist Papers

    Federalist Papers were essays and articles which explained the new Constitution of the United States. Written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay.
  • Bill of Rights

    Comprised of a total of 10 amendments. These amendments were mainly concerned with basic rights of U.S. citizens such as the right to assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and legal rights.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    British put taxes on the colonies' whiskey. It adversely affected the small producers in Virginia and Pennsylvania who started protesting against the tax.

    An American President came to live in it for the first time. President John Adams and his wife Abigail Adams took up residence in the White House.

    Jefferson buys Louisiana from France, doubling the size of the country
  • Burr v. Hamilton

    U.S. founding fathers Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton fight a duel; Hamilton is killed and Burr is ruined.
  • Battle of Tippecanoe

    Indigenous peoples led by Tecumseh fight and lose a major battle opposing White settlement.
  • Battle of Waterloo

    Napoleon Bonaparte surrendered after a devastating loss, ending the Napoleonic Wars in Europe.
  • John Adams contested as President

    The U.S. election that made John Quincy Adams president is bitterly contested and must be resolved by the House of Representatives.
  • Jackson's presidency contested, too

    The election of Andrew Jackson was no less bitter than the previous one, and Jackson's inaugural party nearly wrecked the White House.
  • Attempted Assassination on Jackson

    An English-born house painter attempts to assassinate Jackson, but the president beats him up.
  • The Battle of the Alamo

    A tragic siege at the Alamo became a legendary battle in the Texas War for Independence.
