    the beginning

    the arrival of the Spaniards in 1537 marked the beginning of the first incursions in search of El Dorado. The Spaniards entered through the north of the region, from Cachapoyas to Moyobamba. It was Hernando de Alvarado, brother of the conqueror Alonso de Alvarado,
    with the support of cacique Huamán, who managed to dominate the natives of the area.

    After the conquest follows the colonization directed and made by the missionaries. The Jesuit missionaries soon arrived to these lands for evangelizing purposes, followed by the Franciscans, who fulfilled specific missions: the expansion of the Hispanics in the jungle, the control of the Portuguese territorial ambitions and, of course, catechizing the natives of the region

    In the year 1769, the king of Spain ordered the viceroy Amat and Junet, to expel the Jesuits from Peru and, consequently, from the Peruvian Amazon. This caused certain havoc in the grouped native organizations, as the reductions of the same, that disrupted the life and the customs, producing confusion and destruction of the native identity.

    Upon the arrival of the Spaniards in Tarapoto, the valley was inhabited by natives and, at the same time that they invaded and conquered the native populations,
    they proceeded to found cities taking as a model the city of Nueva Planta, founded by Catholic kings in the conquest of Granada.

    Currently, Tarapoto is the main tourist and commercial axis, as well as the center of the terrestrial and aerial networks in the north-east of Peru; with a population of 149,875 inhabitants (2015, INEI), being the most populated city of the department of San Martín.
