Born in London, England 1922, died in Los Angeles California 2009.
  • Book: The Uses of Argument(1958)

In ‘‘The Uses of Argument’’ Toulmin introduces a number of concepts that have become popular in argumentation theory, such as data, claim, warrant, backing, force, field, and, most fundamentally, the concept of a ‘‘logical type’’.
  • The Toulmin Model

Toulmin created a model as a way to develop, analyze and categorize arguments. The model consisted of six parts; Claim, Data, Warrant, Backing, Modality and Rebuttal.

  • Book: Return to Reason

Stephen Toulmin argues that the potential for reason to improve our lives has been hampered by a serious imbalance in our pursuit of knowledge. The centuries-old dominance of rationality has diminished the value of reasonableness. Toulmin issues a powerful statement to redress the balance between rationality and reasonableness.
  • Stephen Toulmin

Toulmin, used a lot of methods of understanding to contribute to the scientific community. He used very strict guidelines for more affective arguments. This type of logical system changed the way arguments were structured. I would describe it as an algorithm, but in a more detailed form. He used Syllogism which is a valid deductive argument having two premises and a conclusion. The British Logician was the master of inquiry and those contributions were very important to science community.
