  • 1946 Governer's Race

    In 1946, GA ended up having three governers at one time. These three governers were Ellis Arnall, Melvin Thomas, and Herman Talmadge. This was caused when Eugene Talmadge died after he was elected and before he was inaugurated into office. Melvin Thomas was the Lt. Governer, so according to the consitution, he was the new Governer. Herman Talmadge became the governer because making him win. Ellis Arnall didn't leave because there was no new inaugurated governer.

    This was the time soan that Herman Talmadge was governer of Gerogia.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown v Board of EducationThis was the name of the case that was given to 5 seperate cases that regarded the issue of segregated schools. They took the case of the segregated schools not being equal in education as the law had said it should be.
  • Segregation Outlawed

    This was the month that the supreme court had decided to outlaw segregation.
  • Herman Elected into Senate

    Herman Elected into Senate
    This was the year that Herman Talmadge was first elected into senate. He served in the senate for a total of 4 terms. In the senate, he clearly showed signs of being against the movement of desegragation. He had a lot of power towards farming, because he had a strong position in the Agriculture and Foresty Comittee.
  • 1956 State Flag

    1956 State Flag
    This was the year that the stateflag of GA was changed. Many had wanted to have the flag changed because it was confederate and didn't respresent the state. They thought that during the time of change and the civil right movement, this aspect also needed to be changed.

    These were the two people that challenged how UGA segrgated people to GA State College of Business Administration.
  • South Nonviolent Coordinating Committe

    South Nonviolent Coordinating Committe
    This was an organization that started in the 1960's and was key in the Civil Rights Movement. This organization consisted of the Freedom Riders and also led the Albany Movement. They also helf a conference in October, 1960 in Atlanta to coordinate sit ins and other movements.
  • Sibley Commision

    Sibley Commision
    The Sibley Commision was a committe that was created to get public regards about segregation and decide whether the state should close down all of its pulblic schools or comply with the federal law of desegregating them.
  • Andrew Young With SCLC

    Andrew Young With  SCLC
    In 1961, Andrew Young stopped work as a pastor and started to work at the SCLC, a Civil Rights Organization. He helped organize citizenship schools, which tought ways of peaceful strategies in the Civil Rights Movement. As he became an air of MLKJ, his role grew in the SCLC.

    Albany Movement

    This was known as the first mass movement to the goal of desegregation for the African-Americans. this movement has led to the arrest of over a thousand blacks. MLK has went to Albany at the end of 1961, and in the week that he had started to be involved in the movement, him and hundreds of other African-Americans were arrested. He felt that that movement was unsuccessful.

    The Albany Movement was an action taken by local activists, NAACP, and the SNCC in an effort for desegregation. This led in over a thousand arrests including that of Martin Luther King Jr.
  • I Have a Dream Speech

    I Have a Dream SpeechThis was the day that Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. This speech was given to show his opposition to segregation and how he wishes to live in a world where his kids didn't have to be discrimnated.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington InfoThe march was led for Freedom and Jobs. Many of the Civil Rights Organization were invloved in this march, leading it to having around 250000 people attend and be the largest one at the nations capital in addition to be one of the few marches with TV coverage.

  • Lester Maddox as Governer

    Lester Maddox as Governer
    In 1967, Lester Maddox was appointed as governer. As governer, he appoitned many African Americans into governement offices --more than all others combined. After the death of MLK, he feared riots in the city, and heavily populated it with police and even refused to bring the state's flag down half way.
  • Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta

    Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta
    Maynard JacksonIn 1973, Maynard Jackson was appointed as the first mayor of Atlanta. One major improvement that he made to Atlanta was increasing the amount of businesses that were led by minorities. He also helped in bringing the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta.
