This case established that the school must complete intermittent catheterization as it is a related service, not a medical service. A student requiring catheterization was not accommodated as the service was coded as a medical service, making it optional for her school to handle. -
Burlington School Communication v. Mass. Dept. Ed.
This case required schools to reimburse parents for students who have inappropriate IEP plans that require the parents to place their children in private school. This arose from the Panico family disagreeing with the prescribed IEP of their son's public school resulting in him being placed in a private school. -
Honig v. Doe
This case resulted from the indefinite suspension of two students with disabilities due to behavior linked to their disability. The ruling stated that schools could only suspend students with disabilities for up to ten days. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This legislation was built on the foundation of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act by adding individualized education programs, early intervention services, and procedural safeguards for students and their families. This is the foundation for special education today. -
IDEA Amendments
This legislation provided behavior plans, transition planning, and an emphasis on student performance within the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This promoted better student outcomes for disabled students. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This legislation was created to increase school accountability, specifically on academic performance. This included students with disabilities, and it set the standard for data-driven instruction. -
Every Student Succeeds Act
This legislation replaced the No Child Left Behind Act and out control back into the hands of local governments to close achievement gaps. This created the standard for high-quality instruction and equity in classrooms, including those with disabilities.
