    History changed when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball, weighed a little under 200 pounds, and took about 100 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path. That launch started new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age .

  • Apollo-16 launch

    Apollo 16 lifted off onApril 16, 1972, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Three primary objectives were (1) to inspect, survey, and sample materials and surface features (2) activate surface experiments(3) conduct in-flight experiments and photographic tasks from lunar orbit. This is the fifth mission where we walked on the moon.

  • Mars-7 Launch

    The Mars 7 interplanetary station was intended to be a Mars lander. It consisted of a flyby bus and a descent module. The descent module was designed to enter the martian atmosphere but a malfunction on board caused the lander to miss the planet.
