NASA replaced NACA when they took a blow to their pride when Soviet Union completed the orbit their spacecraft, Sputnik. NASA took on the responsiblility to win the "space race." They had achieved many accomplishments since then. -

First Man on the Moon
Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first people to land on the moon successfully. The Americans sent Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong was first to land followed by Edwin Aldrin. Michael Collins had stayed on the spacecraft. This was the finishing blow to the US - Russian "war." -
Spy Satellite
Discoverer XIV is launched by the US Air Force as the first camera equipped spy satellite. Its job was to develop a film-return photographic surveillance satellite to assess how rapidly the Soviet Union was producing long-range bombers and ballistic missiles and where they were being deployed.
