    Aryabhata

    Aryabhata is famous for his book called Aryabhatiya on mathematics and astronomy.He also combined plane trigonometry and spherical geometry and was able to predict solar and lunar eclipses.

    Copernicus

    In 1543 close before he died he worte a book about an idea he had about the universe and the Earths place in it. Back then people thought the Earth was at the middle of the universe and star where little hole in a big glass sphere but Copernicus thought what if the Earth was a planet orbiting the sun but people thought he was wrong but we know that he is right.

    Galileo Galilei

    Galileo Galilei was the first astronomer to use science to find out what the universe was made of. In 1609 he heard of a new invention called the telescope and bulit one himself and used it to look at the universe and up until then people could only guess what was in the universe and Galileo found out that when he looked through the telescope he saw the Milky Way and lots of stars each a differant distance from the Earth.

    Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was also the first human in outer space when his Vostok rocket to completely orbit the Earth on 12 April 1961.

    The famous Sputnik 1 (first object in space) was lauched by the USSR know as Russia today on 4 October 1957.

    Laika the dog was the first dog in space. Unfortunatly Laika died the the spacecraft launched in 3 November 1957.

    NASA stands for national aeronautics and space administration. It was founded on 29/6/1958. The pourpose of NASA is to discover new things in the Solar System so we can learn and discover more about it.
  • skylab

    Skylab was a space station launched by NASA on May 14 1973 it was also operated by NASA. It spent 6 years in orbit and unfortunatly the skylab went back into Earths atmosphere and scatered across the Indian ocean and parts of Western Australia.

    The space shuttle columbia was the first space shuttle to lauch into space on April 12 1981. Its last flight was on January 16 2003 and it was destroyed in February 1 2003. The difference between a spacecrft and space shuttle is it can be lauched more than once rather than only being launched once.there where 6 space shuttles launched.

    On August 24 NASA decieded Pluto was no longer considered a planet because it was really small and its orbit intersecetes the orbit of Neptune and its orbit is not straight like the other planets.

    The last space shutte to launch was the STS-135 lanched on July 8 2011 and landed on July 21 2011.
  • Halleys comet

    Scientists believe that comets are leftovers from the formation of the sun and planets. Halleys comet is the best known of the short period comets because it only apeares every 76-77 years and it can be seen by the naked eye. Halleys comet is named after the English astronomer Edmond Halley.It was fist saw by ancient Greeks which was two centeries before what we think was in the 5th centery BC.
