  • Sony is formed

    The first Sony-branded product, the TR-55 transistor radio, appeared in 1955 but the company name did not change to Sony until January 1958.
  • Sony releases Betamax system

    In order to compete against JCV's VHS system, now the common system for home VCRs, Sony released the Betamax system.
  • Sony introduces 3.5mm floppy disk format

    Sony becomes the dominant sale company of the floppy disks, creating a custom 3.5mm format which later became standard.
  • Sony released first PlayStation model

    By March 31, 2005, Sony had sold 102 million copies of the PlayStation consoles, becoming the first company worldwide to ever sell 100 million gaming consoles.
