Late at night, Milada is awakened by Nazis pounding on her door. She and her family pack their things and are taken out of their house, and are split up. Milada, her mother, and Babichka are then taken to a school's gymnasium.

Milada's grandmother, Bbichka, gives Milada a pin that looks like a star, with red stones, as they are being asked to collect their things.

After being moved into a larger gymnasium and waiting for days, Milada is separated from her Mother and Grandmother, and taken into a truck with one other girl, Ruzha.

Milada arrives with Ruzha at a center, where there are a lot of other girls her age, all with light hair and blue eyes.
