Plessy V. Ferguson
A Supreme court Case that had set up "Seperate but equal" from the court case where Plessy refused to move from the white train car of a train and move to the other black train car. Where he had taken the court case to the Supereme court giving the law that alllowed discrimination and seperation of facilities. This was importat to the Civil Rights movement because it gave the ok to seperate black and white facilities sparking activists. -
Brown V. Board of Education
An black student had wanted to attend a nice shcool that was closer than the other school she attended. So when she was denied entery at that school her parents had made a case stating she had the right to attend that school; it was later decided that schools couldnt deny enterance to students depending on their color. This was important to the civil rights movement because becaus they could no longer deny entry at schools allowing the mix of black and white people at school. -
Murder of Emmett Till
Emmet Till was a fourteen year-old boy that was allegedly accused of flirting with a white girl in a grocery store. A couple days later he was kiddnaped and murdered by some white men; later then tried for court but aquitted. This was important to the civil rights movement because it started an uprise in the activst of civil rights. -
Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks an black woman on a Montgomery bus refused to givce up her seat to a white man she was incarcareted. Four days after the fact the boycotts began black people refusing to take the bus taking buissness away from the bus companies and giving them no ohter choice but to appeal to their wants to not lose money. This was important to the civil rigts movement because it made ann actual change to how were willing to make change if you took something from them -
Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King
Rose up from the bus boycotts; the Sother Leadership Conference on Transportation and Nonviolent Integration was founded to put an end to segregation. Later further developed at another conference and Martin Luther king became its president. -
Little Rock Nine & Central High School
A case that had decided that the segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The school did not allow the black students into the school by having the national guard block the black students from entering, and in response president Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort the sudents in dubbed the "Little Rock Nine". -
Freedom Rider/Freedom Riders
Civil Rights Activists that pushed for the un-segregation of public transportation.This was known as the freedom rides where people rode buses in to the south pushing for busses to allow busses to be un-segregated. -
March on Washington
Around 200,000 people gathered in Washington D.C. to have a rally to give notice to what has been happening to black people and what they have had to face. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I have a dream speech" which called for racial justice. This was an important part of the Civil Rights movement beacuse it created hope of the racial equality -
Student Nonviolent Coordnating Committee (SNCC) & Freedom Summer
A campaign launched by the SNCC to try and register as many African American Voters as possible in Mississippi. The goal had tried to get as many registered black voters by getting college students to help, including white voters from the North. THis made an impact on the civil Rights movement by sprouting up brand new people to the idea of racial equalism and hope for it. -
Civil Rights Act
Act signed by Lyndon Johnson the prohibited prejudice in the US including public places. This was the most extensive Civil rights legislation. This was important to the Civil Rights movement because it was what all the people had been fighting for through all the time. -
Assassination of Malcom X
Malcolm X was assassinated by rival black muslims who were members of the nation of Islam while attending a rally of Afro-American Identity. He was supposedly killed by the Nation of Islam because he had strayed from Islam culture and tried to create a new branch of Islamic culture. This was important to the Civil Rights Movement because it created a Martyr for the philosophies he had. -
Voting Rights Act
This act was signed by Lyndon Johnson outlawing the unfair practices of voting. This stopped the rigorous test some people had to go though to vote; such as literacy test.This was an important part of the Civil Rights because it gave black people more rights for the country they were a part of. -
Greensboro Sit-In
A mass ammount of non-violent protests where people had sit in the white part of the dinners and refused to leave until they were served. This created an bunch of sit-in's and huge responces from the communities from what had to be done about this, This was important to the Civil Rights movement becuase it had caused chain stores to remove their policies of racial segregation. -
Assassination of MLK
While staying at a hotel in Tennessee for a march there was taking place the next day as part of Memphis sanitation workers. MLK was shot and killed in his Hotel room a couple of days before the march. The importance of this event in the fight for Civil Rights because that had made him a martyr causing riots and outpour of violence,
