Sojourner Truth

  • 1797 Ulster County, New York

Isabella Bomfree was born into slavery, bought and sold 4 times. She experienced harsh physical punishment and labor. I think this experienced shape her perspective/world view and maybe influence her interest in wanting change for herself and others.
  • Period: to

    Ran Away

Soujorner ran away with her infant daughter towards the Van Wageners family. The Wageners family help her obtain her freedom, and to get his son back who was illegally sold into slavery. She learned to fight for her freedom and her children's as well. This was a crucial time in her life that imprinted her ability and agility to succeed, and this reinforce her deep believe that perhaps things could change. This was a turning point that inspire/motivated her as an abolitionist.
  • Period: to

    Work with Minister, NY

During this time Sojourner started working with a minister and participated in religious revivals; gaining experience and becoming a charismatic speaker. She changed her name from Isabella Bomfree to Sojourner Truth, because she believed that her calling was to speak the truth after a spiritual experience. I think she was able to find her voice for her self and others to become an abolitionist and women's rights activist. This gave her a sense of purpose and faith/hope for the future.
  • Period: to

    "Ain't I a woman?" Women's rights conference 1851

William Lloyd Garrison/ Frederick Douglass (abolitionist/evil of slavery) involved in the movement against slavery in a more proactive way to address the concerns/needs of racial/gender inferiority inequalities (e.g. segregation). She dictated her book, gaining national recognition (The Narrative of Sojourne Truth). Elizabeth cady Stanton/ Susan B. Anthony also introduced to women's rights movement. Finding people who shared her experiences/values/foundations/ goals inspired her as an activist.
