This is the author making the connection to the alien land law event because the defendant is a Japanese person. -

This draws a comparison to the propaganda films that were used to encourage people to go to war in WWII. -

(history.com) this is making the connection that his father was in the Pearl harbor attack and the horror of the situation. -
