In World War 2, Japanese people were forced to move to concentration camps in the western country. Half of the people were US citizens and faced traumatic experiences. “These were boys from the internment camps, enlistees headed for the European theater, and among them, Sergeant Maples recalled, was the defendant Kabou Miyamoto.” (Guterson 137). David Guterson express how the boys were trained combat and taught about war at a young age to be able to defend themselves for war.

The Battle of Tarawa was a fought between November 20-23 located on Pacific Theater during World War 2. This was one of the bloodiest and life changing for Japan that caused many Japanese, Korean, and Americans died. "There were guys who prayed at Tarawa," said Ishmael. "They still got killed, Mother. As a synonym for a break-up note sent by a woman to a man in uniform, the Dear John letter made its debut in a major national newspaper in October 1943. “I don't love you, Ishmael. I can think of no more honest way to say it”(170). The author shows how she wrote the letter to him because he doesn’t love him anymore. He also uses emotion to show how sad it is in the letter.

The Battle of Okinawa was a battle fought on Okinawa and faced US army. It was the last major battle of World War 2. "Carl Heine, a man who had endured the sinking of the Caton and who, like Horace himself, had survived Okinawa only to die." (Guterson 26). The author uses irony to show how he went through the war and sinking of his ship but then he died while fishing.

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is held in Honolulu, Hawaii, it marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines on USS Arizona. "After Pearl Harbor," he said to her, "my father buried all of this." Then he began to pull things out--wooden swords, hakama pants, a bokken, a naginata, scrolls written in Japanese--and placed each carefully on the kitchen table." (Guterson 173).
