  • Over All Premise

    Over All Premise
This book is about a 15 year old girl, Oakley, who hasn't spoken since she was 5, who lives in England. They are all trying to cure her but little do they all know she is not speaking because she cannot tell a dirty secret about her own father. In this book it shows her emotion and actions during the year while she struggles with not talking. I chose this book because it seemed interesting and it was recommended from a friend.
  • First day back to school: Event 1

First day back to school: Event 1
It is Oakley's first day of Highschool, which she is dreading. When she got to school she was doing fine, until she saw her worst enemy, Luke. He kept trying to get her attention during class which ended up making both of them have detention. Later, during detention, the teacher walked out ande Luke got out of his seat and tried hurting Oakley. He had her up against a wall until Cole ran in and stopped him from punching her. When I read this I was worried for her because she wasn't able to yell.
  • First highschool Party: Event 2

    First highschool Party: Event 2
One day at school Oakley was sitting with Cole and his friends. They were talking about a party coming up and invited Oakley. This part of the book is a big deal, because she was changing her attitude and being more social. Oakley went to the party with cole and stayed around him the whole time because she didn't know many people. When I read this I was shocked because she is known as a quite girl who doesn't do much. Oakley went to her first high school party.
  • Crushes: Event 3

    Crushes: Event 3
Cale and Oakley went to a movie with two of their friends, when the two boys went to the bathroom Oakley was told by her friend that is a girl that cole likes her and never stops talking about her. This was a big part in the book because Oakley likes him too and it changed a lot that went on during the rest of the story. I knew it was coming becuase in the story he was so protective and it gave off hints that he had feelings for her.
  • Doctor: Event 4

    Doctor: Event 4
Oakley's mom told her she was gonna bring her out for ice cream but later in the car found out she was going to a doctor. Her mom was always trying to cure her even though she was uncurable. The doctor was checking her throat to see if something was jammed in it but when she couldn't see anything she suggested she gets surgery to check it out. Oakley got scared and ran out crying. This was big because they can't find out why Oakley isn't speaking or it will ruin her family.
  • Barbeque: Event 5

    Barbeque: Event 5
Oakley and Cole were in a big fight because he tried telling her to speak again. To make it worse Oakley had to go to a barbeque and Cole's to plan the holiday, because the two families were going to Italy. They didn't speak the whole time, until the very end when Cole asked her to come in with him. He apologized and made it somewhat better. This is big in the story because Oakley has never gotten so mad at him until that day at school when he tried making her speak to him when he was frustrated
  • Italy: Event 6

    Italy: Event 6
Over holiday Oakley and Cole's families go to Italy together. While they are there, Cole asked Oakley to be his girlfriend, and she said yes. The whole break they were spending their time together and adventuring Italy. They changed a lot as a couple but they couldn't tell their parents yet. This is a big part of the story because their relationship went up and it changed the person Oakley was by becoming more happy.
  • Sweet 16: Event 7

    Sweet 16: Event 7
It was Oakley's sixteenth birthday and her mom insisted she had a big party, so she invited the whole grade, including Luke, and decorated a pink party. Oakley was miserable because she didn't like anyone in her grade and hated pink. During the party when she walked up to her room Luke came after her and was expressing how he loves her and was trying to attack her at the same time. She punched him right in the face which made him mad. So he went up in front of everyone and started telling...
  • Sweet 16 Continued

    Sweet 16 Continued
everyone about how Oakley and Cole were dating. While he was saying this Jasper, Oakleys older brother, went after him, so the party was called off. This is a big part because Oakley was brave enough to go after him when he tried hurting her and also it got the two families questioning about them.
  • Coming out to parents: Event 8

Coming out to parents: Event 8
Two weeks after Oakley turned 16, the two of them decided it was finally time to tell their parents they were dating. When the two of them got the families together to tell them it didn't turn out as planned. The parents were yelling and not very happy about it and kept calling Oakley a girl with problems. Oakley and Cole got up and left and spent the night in a hotel to get away from the parents. It was a big part because the parents didn't approve them.
  • Dad's Trip: Event 9

    Dad's Trip: Event 9
One weekend Oakley's dad decides to take her on a camping trip. On the way there she noticed where they were going. He was bringing her up to the cabin where his friend, Dan, used to sexually abuse her. One they arrived Dan was there. When they got there she ran away before they could do anything and called Cole, it was the first time she spoke in eleven years. This is very big because this is the reason she stopped talking in the first place and she thought it stopped until he brought her back.
  • Leaving: Event 10

    Leaving: Event 10
After Cole got Oakley her dad was arrested. Months after the incident Oakley's mom, brother and, her were still not normal after everything that went on. They showed up to Cole's house one day and told them that they had to leave the country, and that they were moving to Austrailia by more family. Cole and Oakley were both very sad, becuase they were gonna have to break up. This event wrapped up the whole story and ended all the conflicts.
  • Overall

    Overall
Overall, I thought the book, Silence by Natsha Preston, was good but had spots that could be better. I liked the mystery in the book on what was going on with Oakley and her secret, but there were some parts in the book that were irrelevent and didn't need to be involved in the book. I would read the second in the series if I have the oppurtunity and recommend to read. Some parts in the book weren't very believeable with her speaking, but otherwise it was good. This book was worth reading.
