    The Japanese made a strict rule throughout the time they were occupying Hong Kong because of the lack of food and the possible counter - attack from the other allies, because of that the citizens of Hong Kong that were unemployed got sent away to other parts of China. Due to that the population of Hong Kong decreased from 1.6 million in 1941 to 600,000 in 1945.

    Japan attacked Hong Kong and after 18 days of battle the governor Mark Young surrendered the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong to Japan 25 December 1941. The surrender happened after 18 days of fierce fighting against the Japanese forces that invaded Hong Kong.

    Life was hard for people under Japanese rule. As there was not enough food supplies, the Japanese rationed the necessities such as rice, oil, flour, salt and sugar. Each family was given a rationing licence, and every person could only buy 6.4 taels (240 g (8.5 oz)), of rice per day. Most of the people did not have enough food to eat or to feed their families and many of them died of starvation. The rationing system was cancelled in 1944.

    Japan lost 1,895 men killed of around 6,000 casualties.1,111 men killed, 1,167 missing and 1,362 wounded.C Force casualties in battle were 23 officers, 267 others killed or died including 5 officers,16 others of the brigade headquarters, seven officers and 123 men of the Royal Rifles,11 officers and 128 men of Winnipeg Grenadiers.C Force also had 28 officers and 465 men wounded.At the end of Feb 1942,The Japan government stated the number of prisoners of war in Hong Kong with a total of 10,947.

    Hong Kong dollars were outlawed and replaced by the Japanese Military Yen. The exchange rate was fixed at 2 Hong Kong dollars to 1 Military Yen.

    After three years and eight months Japan finally decided to surrender due to the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan specifically in Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the US.
