  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    Battle of Chancellorsville between Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union Maj. General Joseph Hooker was in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. This Confederate victory resulted in 30,000 casualties. 2/3 of the total number of casualties occurred on May 3rd alone. 40,000 Union troops saw little to no action due to a tactical error. Robert E. Lee was outnumbered 5 to 2 at Chancellorsville. Confederate Lieut. "Stonewall" Jackson was accidentally shot by his own men and died May 10th as a result.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    General Grant was given command of the Union forces attacking Vicksburg. The city fell and surrendered on July 4, 1863, because of back to back Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. This battle was significant because all Confederate hopes for foreign help were lost and the Union gained control of the Mississippi river. The Confederate army lost 1,413 soldiers and the Union lost 1,581.
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    Battle of Chickamauga
    The Battle of Chickamauga took place in Catoosa County and Walker County, Georgia on September 18-20, 1863 with a total of 34,600 casualties. This Confederate victory was between Braxton Bragg against William Rosecrans. This was the bloodiest battle of the 110 battles fought in the Civil War. The Native American translation of "Chickamauga" is "River of Death".
  • Lincoln's 10% plan

    Lincoln's 10% plan
    Lincoln's reconstruction plan stated that former Confederate States would be readmitted to the Union of 10% of their citizens took a loyalty oath and the State agreed to ratify the 13th admendment that otlawed slavery. It was not put into effect becasue Lincoln was asassinated.
  • Wade-Davis Bill-veto

    This bill declared that the Reconstruction of the South was a legislative, not executive, matter. It was an atttempt to weaken the power of the president. Lincoln vetoed it for obvious reasons. The Wade-Davis Manifesto said Lincoln was acting like a dictator by vetoing it.
  • Battle of Appomattox Courthouse

    Battle of Appomattox Courthouse
    Grant with 100,00 men moved towards Richmond and encountered Lee in a series of battles in the Wilderness of Virginia. Both sides suffered great casualties. Grant then ordered a frontal assault on the impregnable position of cold Harbor The Union soldiers advanced. Northern troops quickly advancing captured Richmond and cornered Lee at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. Grant meet with Lee and offered him terms of surrender, this was a Union victory. This is significant becaue it ended the War.
  • Lincoln Assassinated

    Lincoln Assassinated
    John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln at Ford's Theatre. He then escaped to a barn and when he refused to comeout the barn was set on fire. Booth was shot, either by himself or a soldier.
  • Andrew Johnson takes office

    Andrew Johnson takes office
    Johnson became president when Lincoln was assassinated. He opposed Radical Republicans who passed Reconstruction Acts over his veto. He was the first U.S. president to be impeached, but survived the Senate removal by only one vote. He was a very weak president.
  • Radification of the13th amendment

    Radification of the13th amendment
    The 13th amendment officially ended the institution of slavery. This came 8 months after the Civil War ended. When Georgia ratified it on Dec 6, slavery ceased to exist in the United States.
  • Tenure of Office Act

    Enacted by Radical Republicans, it forbade the presientfrom removin civil officers without consent of the Senate. It was meant to prevent Johnson from removing radicals fom office. Johnson's effort to remove Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, whom he considered a spy for the Radicals in cabinent meetings, wa seen as a violation of the Tenure of Office Act and led to the impeachment of the president.
