The raft was built as early as civilization started traveling through water. The Greeks and the Phoenicians were the most sea-fairing people and built large cargo ships out of rafts. The raft was very simple to make being that it had either oak logs or ash logs tied together because they are more boyant. The raft had no sail and very little man power witch made it hard to float up stream on a river or sail across a whole ocean without capsizing.

The Roman Cargo ship was built in the late 100's B.C and dominated the Mediterranean. The ship was designed for transportation, or delivering cargo and goods from territories and trade. Occaisonally it would be used as a war ship for transporting soldiers across the sea.

In the late 1,000's the scandinavian vikings invented the long boat. The long boat was long and narrow, it could sail a whole ocean without capsizing and it could also sail along rivers.

The Chinese Junk was developed around the mid 1,000's by the Chinese. It was meant for transporting passengers or cargo for trade.

The cog ship was built around the early 1200's. The Cog was built in medieval Europe and had slots built on the sides where cannons could be mounted.

The Carrack was a ship built in the 15th century by the Portuguese but later built and used by the Europeans as war ships or cargo ships.

The Ironclad Steam ship was built in the 1800's. It's primary purpose was for war. It was built with Iron plates around it and was mounted with guns or cannons.

The Aircraft carrier was built around the 1900's. It's mainly a war ship made to hold planes and jets. It has a long runway made for the aircrafts to take off and land.

The Galley is a ship that was built around the 800's in the Mediterranean region. It was used for transport, warfare, or piracy
