Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew"

  • Induction

    A drunken tinker is found passed out in the street by a local lord. This lord proceeds to play a joke on Sly that has the tinker believing that he himself is a lord and has been sick for several years. Sly is told that a troupe of actors is there to present a play. The "Taming of the Shrew" begins.
  • Lucentio's Arrival

    A rich boy named Lucentio and his servants, Tranio, and Biondello, arrive in Pauda to go to school. This goal is changed when Lucentio first sets eyes on Bianca, a fair maiden that lives in the city.
  • Problems

    We see that Bianca already has multiple suitors. Two older gentlemen named Hortensio and Gremio. These men already know Signor Baptista, Bianca's father, well and have an advantage. Bianca is also unable to wed until her shrewish sister, Katherine is married off. None of the men in town want her though because of her curst attitude. This rule is set by Baptista.
  • The Switch

    Lucentio decides that to be close to Bianca he will become her tutor. He switches places with Tranio and disguises himself as a teacher named Cambio. Hortensio also has this idea and becomes her music teacher. However Bianca doesn't take to Hortensio like she does to Lucentio.
  • A Brash Man

    Petruchio, Hortensio's friend, comes from Verona to find himself a wife. He does not care what she looks or acts like as long as she brings him lots of money. He decides to marry her sight unseen.
  • The Meeting

    Petruchio goes to meet Baptista and Katharine. They fight and at the end Petruchio claims that she will marry him whether she wants to or not. He tells Baptista they will wed on Sunday.
  • First Marriage

    Petruchio is late to his own wedding and when he does show up he is dressed ridiculously. He causes an uproar at the church and tells everyone that Katherine is his property. Then they leave. Petruchio continues to "tame" Katherine by keeping her from eating or sleeping for several days. His words being 'killing with kindness' and he does all this out of his love for her.
  • Winning Bianca's Heart

    In Pauda Lucentio wins Bianca's heart and Hortensio marries a wealthy widow. Tranio secures Baptista's approval for him by offering up a large sum of money. Baptista agrees but must meet his father.
  • Second Marriage

    Tranio and Lucentio set out to find an old man to play Lucention's father. Tranio finds an old schoolmaster to play the part but Lucentio and Bianca decide to just elope.
  • Family Now

    Petruchio and Katherine go to visit Baptista. Katherine's willfulness is disappearing. She agrees with whatever Petruchio says. They meet Lucentio's father on the way and learn of the other marriage.
  • Petruchio's Victory

    Bianca's marriage is approved. Hortensio's wedding banquet sets up a bet between all married men attending on who has the most obedient wife. Petruchio wins as he has successfully tamed Katherine.
  • Katherine Is Tamed

    Katherine gives a speech on how all women should serve their husbands without hesitation or question. The others acknowledge that Petruchio has won and then he and Katherine head off to bed happy.
