Hae Min Lee Disappears
Lee was a high school senior at Woodlawn High School in Maryland. She was Korean, smart, and played field hockey and lacrosse. On the day of disappearance, she was supposed to pick up her little cousin from kindergarten. Lee's parents knew something was up when she never showed to pick up her cousin that day. -
Jay's Story of Hae's Death
Jay tells detectives that on the day of Hae's disappearance, Adnan told him that he was going to kill her and that he should pick him up after it's done. He takes Adnan to track practice so he has an alibi then that evening around 7 or 8 p.m. They bury Hae's body at Leakin Park. -
Adnan Leaves School
Sometime before noon, Adnan claims that during one of his free periods at school he went to Jay's house to see if he got his girlfriend a birthday present. Jay had not yet gotten one so Adnan offers his car to him so he can go buy one after he drops Adnan back off at school. -
Adnan's afterschool Activities
on the day of Hae's disappearance Adnan claims that he would have had track practice around 3 or 3:30. There was an hour between school and practice that he could not recall. School got out at 2:15 and Hae was dead by 2:36 pm according to phone records and Jay's story. It was crucial to the case that Adnan could not account for the 21 minutes between when Hae was last seen leaving school and when she died. -
Library Alibi
Asia McClain, Who wrote a couple letters to Adnan's family claims that she specifically remembers seeing Adnan at the Woodlawn public library right after school on the day of Hae's disappearance. When brought up at the trial, she denies that this had happened and said she lied and wrote the letters because of pressure from Adnan's family. She later tells Sarah that she specifically remembers talking to him and that he very calmly explained how he and Hae broke up that day. -
Hae's Body Found
When a maintenance guy stopped to use the bathroom in the middle of a park in Baltimore, he saw black hair peeking out of a grave. The cause of death was manual strangulation. -
Adnan Syed Arrested
Six weeks after Lee first went missing, her Ex-boyfriend was arrested for committing her murder and he has been in prison ever since. -
The First Letter
Asia McClain writes the first letter to Adnan, one day after he is arrested where she claims she remembers talking with him in the library after school on January 13th. She also claims that her boyfriend and best friend remember seeing him there as well. -
Second Letter
Asia writes a second letter to Adnan where she explains the gossip that had been circulating at school since his arrest. She claims she visited his family. Adnan later says that he did remember seeing Asia at the library that day. -
Note from Gutierrez's Law Clerks
Christina Gutierrez had one of her law clerks visit Adnan in jail four months after his arrest. They wrote a note that said,"Asia McClain saw him in the library at 3:00. Asia boyfriend saw him too. Library may have cameras." However, Asia was still never heard from at trial. -
Adnan Convicted
After weeks of trial, Adnan was convicted of First degree murder of the death of Hae and was sentenced to life in prison plus thirty years.
